Often in any academic/scholarly field, there are a series of implicit (or even explicit) rules regarding how one should present their ideas in discourse, and many of these can tie to the basic interaction principles outlined by Hyland; your goal is to determine which basic principles are prevalent in the articles you’ve found in your research, and to try to discern why they might be a “norm” of writing within that field. From these considerations, you will construct an analysis paper of at least 1,300-1,500 words, wherein you will evince the conventions you identify through strong examples, establish parameters for which conventions seem most consistently engaged, and discuss what possible impacts they have on the larger discourse of the discipline; that is, why might they be an implicit or explicit standard of research writing in that field? What do they do to help ensure a uniform authority, help build a unifying quality to the presentation of the research, or offer a consistent clarity of expression within the larger discourse of the discipline? While these questions are not strictly formulaic, you should attempt to consider this sort of “bigger picture” research in the field through the course of your analysis. In addition to the analysis paper, you will also be required to submit a fully annotated copy of one of the articles you use for the analysis; your annotations should clearly identify and offer helpful, succinct commentary on the major interaction conventions present within that article. This annotated article should be submitted alongside your completed paper, to act as a visual aid highlighting and supplementing the findings your paper discusses. To help you understand how this sort of examination and evaluation is done, we will not only discuss and practice in class, but you will also watch the series of Videos on “Research Writing across the Disciplines” from Dr. Fife to help you understand what you’re looking to identify, and how.Note that the focus here is not on the ideas or arguments of the articles, but on examining and commenting on how they are presented. While you may need to provide some context from the topics at hand in your sources to approach the conventions, this is not a summary of the articles, or an analysis of their arguments. Focus on the linguistic and rhetorical qualities of Hyland’s articles, and if you need further clarification or more potential angles for exploration, you may also reference Wolfe, Olson, and Wilder’s “Knowing What We Know about Writing in the Disciplines: A New Approach to Teaching for Transfer in FYC”—this article offers helpful information on macrostructures and integral/non-integral citation, which are also possible conventions for consideration.Full Assignment Specifications: The Convention Analysis paper should be a minimum of 1,300-1,500 words; it should be typed, double-spaced, in 12 pt. Times New Roman font, and should in all other ways adhere to the guidelines of style and citation that best apply to your major/field. The annotated articles should be submitted with comments/sticky notes/other annotation tools active at time of saving and submission so that they are accessible. Failure to submit the annotated article with the analysis paper will result in a loss of 15 points (10%) off of the maximum potential score for the assignment.
