1-History & Statistical Data ( my Social Problem : Homelesssness – eviction rates in the pandemic ) give an overview of your social problem, including a short history and its statistical prevalence. This is a critical first step since it grounds your work in scientifically-derived data which will provide the foundation for the balance of your work for this project. You will note that this is much the same format your textbook uses as it introduces each new social problem. Summarize your data by briefly describing it in your own words. Be sure to use reliable sources of statistics, and cite your sources. Make sure your websites are credible: sites such as .edu, .org, .gov are usually more reliable. You are responsible for assessing website credibility, but you have tools to help. Use the Johns Hopkins Sheridan Libraries resource, Evaluating Information as well as this checklist to Evaluate Web Page Content (.docx). Bradner Library at Schoolcraft College has access to many reliable resources; see the Sociology Library Guide on the library website for more information. 2- Macro-Level Analysis & Theory a) What are institutional causes of your social problem? Identify two society-level structures, systems, or processes that have affected the social problem. This analysis will probably include such macro-level structures as stratification systems and social institutions. Be sure that you have carefully reviewed the module that discusses your social problem. b) Why does this social problem exist? Analyze the social problem using what you think are the two most appropriate sociological perspectives, the two that best explain why the problem exists. You will contrast these two distinct perspectives on the issue. Review how the textbook presents this material; you may find it helpful. 3- Other Solutions Explore one social service agency (federal*, state, or local) or legislative advocacy group and one social movement or advocacy organization working on solutions to your social problem. Keep in mind to look at the struggles they had as well as the triumphs. Consider the following questions: Which aspects of the problem have they attempted to address? What population are they targeting? What challenges did they need to overcome? What did not work? What were their successes? What did work? What might they have done differently? *Currently, whitehouse.gov is a reliable source for existing and proposed general federal government policies. 4- Write a formal letter (minimum of 650 words) to an appropriate authority figure, proposing solutions for your social problem. Integrate what you have learned in your research and support your suggestions with specific examples whenever possible. Do not forget to give credit to any agencies, organizations, and other sources whose ideas and data you reference. As you consider possible recipients for your recommendations, refer to Module 14 for links to elected officials and check out the Explore More links for the module that fits your social problem. For information on formal letter writing, see Writing the Basic Business Letter. Save your assignment as a Word document (.docx) and upload it to the assignment area by clicking on the Browse My Computer button below the text editor.

focus: Drawback and Alternatives to Advice In lectures and during labs we have discussed ways to support a client. We have also discussed giving advice, and why it is NOT helpful for a client. There are multiple ways that a counsellor may give advice to a client. You have probably noticed these examples happening in your lab practice. Forms of advice are: Direct advice, expressed directly (i.e. “You should get a job!”) Direct advice, expressed tentatively (i.e. “Maybe you should get a job”) Direct advice, in the form of a suggestion (i.e. “What would probably make you feel better is getting a job”) Indirect advice, in the form of a closed question (i.e. “Have you considered getting a job?”) Indirect advice, in the form of an indirect question (i.e. “I wonder if you have considered getting a job” or “I wonder if getting a job would help”) Indirect advice, in the form of personal disclosure (i.e. “What made me feel better when I was in your position was getting a job”) By referring to the above list, provide two (2) examples of how you generally tend to give advice to people around you. Be specific in defining each example (2 mark) How was the type of advice you mentioned in #1 demonstrated during your lab? Did you give the same type of advice to clients during your lab practice, or you were able to apply micro skilled learned during the semester? Give examples of what you said or did (verbally and non-verbally) with your client that shows you are using professional/counselling skills. (2 Mark) Counselling skills require ongoing practice. How could the skill you mentioned in #1 #2 be strengthened? Give examples of what you would say or do (verbally and non-verbally) with your client in the future that would be an improvement. How will you make these improvements? Give specifics steps you will take to improve. (2 mark) Using your textbook and the readings on Blackboard (under Learning Materials each week) give three (3) reasons why giving any form of advice is NOT helpful to your client. Make sure you cite the readings you use in your answer, and include them in a reference list. (0.5-1 page answer, written in paragraph form). (2 Mark) Using your textbook and the readings on Blackboard (under Learning Materials each week) give three (3) alternative to giving any form of advice to your client. Make sure you cite the readings you use in your answer, and include them in a reference list. (0.5-1 page answer, written in paragraph form) (2 Mark)
