Rawls principles in nursing ethics

Doctors at hospital H are asked to participate in the test of a new drug D that will cause people to expectorate the contents of their stomachs. It is to be used when people accidentally or deliberately ingest something that causes severe illness and threatens life. Now such a drug would most often be used in emergency rooms and with those who attempt suicide. The doctors are wondering whether or not to participate in the tests. If they do so they are expected to administer the drug D to those brought into the ER. People brought into the ER who would need to have the contents of their stomachs emptied quickly are likely to be those who have attempted suicide. Now the doctors are wondering if they can inform people who are to receive the test drug of the experiment and get their permission for participating in the test. If they do stop to inform them and get permission many of those people may not give it as they had wanted to die in the first place. Others may not be conscious and rational at a level that they can understand what is being told to them.   If the doctors were to use the principles of John Rawls how might they go about their deliberations? What conclusion would be based on Rawls principles?

Ashford 3: – Week 2 – Assignment 1
Autobiography Essay
Write an autobiographical essay about a significant event or person in your life. Choose the event or person with your readers in mind. The subject should be one that you feel comfortable presenting to others and that will lead readers to reflect on their own lives or on the differences between your personal experiences and their own. Present your experience dramatically and vividly so that readers can imagine what it was like for you. Through a careful choice of words and details, convey the meaning and importance in your life – the autobiographical significance – of this event or person.
The paper must be two to three pages in length (not including title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style. Cite your resources in text and on the reference page. My Mom, My Hero
A true hero is one you never here about. They are usually lurking in the shadows, and that is the way they like it. Before I picked a hero, I thought about to have: kindness, a good attitude, and strength. My mother has many of these qualities and more all the qualities a hero has. My mom is my hero and my best friend.  She is a great person. Through good times, and bad, I still look up to her.
We always go shopping, or to the movies, and puts others before herself.  She lives in Indiana, married for twenty 22 years. My mom has shown me more kindness than I could ever ask for. My mom was born June 29, 1942 in Milwaukee Wis. Now she lives in Elkhart, Indiana. My mom works full time for Walmart. She has a husband, six kids, even though five of the kids are moved out and on their on, one still lives at home. She also has four dogs, and a couple cats.
The first quality is kindness. My mom has always put others before herself. At Christmas time she always thinks of the door greeters and cart pushers. She bakes little tins of bread, such as banana bread, pumpkin, cranberry. They each get three loaves of bread in a zipped lock bag. When the postmen collect food for the needy she always gives them food, she donates  money to organizations such as ASPA, and War Veterans. Even with all these responsibilities, she always manages to keep a smile on her face, and she is always there when you need a hand. She always taught me to think of those that are not as lucky as you.
The second quality is to have a good personality. I look up to my mother because of her amazing personality. She has a great sense of humor, and she is always there to talk to, and she is always there to listen. A hero must have goals. Goals keep you going in life. Without them, there is nothing to look forward to. My mother has many goals. She might not reach them all, but everyday she is accomplishing more and more. My mother told me when she was younger one of her goals was to get married and have kids who love her. I’m sure she knows this, but she has accomplished this goal far beyond what she could hope for.
Quality is the next thing I think a hero should have. A good attitude will get you far in life you will be able to accomplish anything. Many times my mom would come home from having one  of the worst days ever, and still have a good attitude. One of the things I admire my mom most was she always had a positive outlook on thing, and she taught us that by having a positive outlook in life you will get far.
Strength is the last quality I believe a hero should have, not physical but mental. To be mentally strong will help you to get through everyday situations. My mother is one of the smartest people I know. She knows the right think to say, and she knows how to handle many situations. I love my mom very much, she will always be my hero.
is the first assignment  I posted, I believe it needs to be revised and thanks

Introduction to Philosophy

Unit 1 Discussion Board
Deliverable Length: 2–3 paragraphs
Details:

The Discussion Board (DB) is part of the core of online learning. Classroom discussion in an online environment requires the active participation of students and the instructor to create robust interaction and dialogue. Every student is expected to create an original response to the open-ended DB question as well as engage in dialogue by responding to posts created by others throughout the week. At the end of each unit, DB participation will be assessed based on both level of engagement and the quality of the contribution to the discussion.

At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original and thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly dialogue by responding to at least two other posts from students. The first contribution must be posted before midnight (Central Time) on Wednesday of each week. Two additional responses are required after Wednesday of each week. Students are highly encouraged to engage on the Discussion Board early and often, as that is the primary way the university tracks class attendance and participation.

The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow students to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content and the DB question. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB will be accepted after the end of each week.

One thing that unites all humans—despite culture or time period—is the desire to be happy. Since the beginning of Western philosophy, philosophers have been asking the question, “How can I find happiness?”

In Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle asserts that all things have their own primary purpose, or end. He says that the good, or happiness, can be achieved by reaching that primary purpose. For example, an acorn’s primary purpose or end is to grow into an oak tree. An airplane’s primary purpose is to fly. And according to Aristotle, a human’s primary purpose is to develop reason and intellect—and to develop this intellect to its fullest potential. If this can be done, he says that happiness will be found, and the individual will be living the good life. And yet, Aristotle says, the “common run of people” (i.e., the Average Joe) look for happiness through pleasure, wealth, or honor. Consider the following passage from Nichomachean Ethics (Baird & Kaufmann, 2000):

Since all knowledge and every choice is directed toward some good, let us discuss what is… the highest good attainable by action. As far as its name is concerned, most people would probably agree: for both the common run of people and cultivated men call it happiness, and understand by “being happy” the same as “living well” and “doing well.” But when it comes to defining what happiness is, they disagree, and the account given by the common run differs from that of the philosophers. The former say it is some clear and obvious good, such as pleasure, wealth, or honor; some say it is one thing and other another, and often the very same person identifies it with different things at different times: when he is sick he thinks it is health, and when he is poor he says it is wealth: and when people are conscious of their own ignorance, they admire those who talk above their heads in access of greatness. Some thinkers used to believe that there exists over and above these many good another good, good in itself and by itself, which also is the cause of good in all these things. (1)

Take a moment to reflect on this passage, and then write 2–3 paragraphs in response to the following questions:

  • What do you think of Aristotle’s conclusion that the good life is a life of intellectual contemplation? Are there other ways of life that could bring happiness?
  • Aristotle says that the common person’s definition of happiness is different than the philosopher’s. In what ways do you imagine it would be different, and why?
  • Which branch of philosophy do you think this discussion of the good life, or happiness, would fall under? Please be sure to explain your reasoning.

In your own words, please post a response to the Discussion Board and comment on other postings. You will be graded on the quality of your postings.

For assistance with your assignment, please use your text, Web resources, and all course materials.
