Part 1. I’d like you to begin by responding in a paragraph (some of you have asked if you can write more than that, and yes you can) to something you experienced in the materials Gillian Hemme shared with us. What you select is your choice.
Part 2. In her Power Point that she shared with us on the history of Piven Theatre and some of the work of Piven’s EPIC prison theatre program, GIllian Hemme posed questions to consider if you were to begin thinking about what your own response might be to an issue or social problem that is important to you. For this part of the response, I’m asking you to consider some of those questions (and I’ve added a few things here, too):
What social problem or issue you do you feel compelled to address? Why? (If the “why” is deeply personal, share only what you are comfortable with.)
What is currently being done around this problem/issue?
This is not an exhaustive research question as it might be for a paper, but you should do a few internet queries and see what’s out there.
What specific skills and talents do you have? (Creative and otherwise.)
How might you address the issue using your skills and talents?
Have you been inspired by how someone or a group has approached an issue? If so, are you modeling any of your ideas on that program or venture?
Please write your thoughts in paragraph form. Integrate your response to the bullet-pointed questions in no particular order, but in the way that works best for you. Please spell-check your document before you upload it.
*New writing consideration.* In addition to a previous writing challenge to try to avoid stating “in my opinion,” from this week forward I’d like you to resist the word “show” in your writing when you are referring to a play, production, or performance. The primarly reason is that while we all might refer to a piece of theatre we have just seen as a “show” in casual conversation, when it comes to writing it can get confusing when you use “show(s)” as both a noun and a verb — especially when it happens in the same sentence.
