buliding a research plan analyzing sources

your topic will need to stem from the following question in some way: “What is something that happens in school (middle school, high school, or college) that limits student agency?”

In short: You will all research a problem that you have identified within the education system. For your final essay (the paper after this one), you will outline the problem, explain how student agency is limited because of what is happening, and then offer a reasonable, achievable solution to the problem.

Assignment Specifics:

Interestingly, this Essay #3 will NOT make an argument (that will come in your final paper of the semester); instead, Essay #3 outlines your research process for learning about your topic and summarizes and evaluates your sources. In this essay, you will:

  • introduce your topic, research question, and research process
  • outline the SOAP of THREEdifferent articles (we’re looking for articles found in the public domain)
  • summarize the main ideas of each article
  • discuss important, surprising, or relevant passages from each article
  • conclude by teasing out the similarities and differences between the arguments.

Essay #3 should be between 4 and 5 pages long, typed and double-spacedin 12-point, Times New Roman font; it should include in-text citationsand a Works Cited pagefollowing MLA format; and the essay should follow my Format for Written Work.

You should prioritize paraphrase over quotation when writing your summaries. You must cite ALL paraphrases.

Some questions that might lead you to a specific topic:

  • What barriers exist that prevent first-generation college students from graduating from college?
  • What barriers exist that make higher education particularly challenging for international students?
  • Are “Dreamers” still struggling to graduate college, despite being eligible to attend? Why or why not?
  • Does the cost of college limit what students choose to study in college?
  • Do parents and/or cultural values limit what majors students choose to study?
  • Are four-year colleges that focus on a liberal arts foundation hindering student progress? Why or why not?
  • Are we teaching college composition all wrong? Why or why not?
  • Are educators creating unmotivated students? Why or how so?
  • What factors lead students to plagiarize in college?
  • Are colleges and universities investing in the appropriate resources to support students?
  • Do students plagiarize in college because of how they are taught in secondary schools? Why or why not?
  • Are students underprepared for college-level writing?
  • Are students inadequately prepared to write in the workforce after graduation?

Source Search List:

  • Write down your topic or research question that you think you might want to explore for this project:
  • Then, cross out unnecessary words and underline important terms:
  • Based on your identified search terms, start searching! If you get too many or too few results, modify your search terms.
  • What search terms ended up being unhelpful? What search terms ended up being helpful?
  • Why do you think the terms lists in your second column ended up being helpful? How did they help you get closer to your final Project #3 topic and source list?

e.g.: What barriers exist that prevent first-generation college students from graduating from college?

e.g. Whatbarriersexist that preventfirst-generation college studentsfromgraduating?

discussion about article read first

There’s a lot going on in this essay. Look at the Attached document, and use it to address the following questions:

What distinctions does Foucault make between a person and an author?
What are some of the compelling ideas, and what makes them speak to you?

When answering these, think about using full paragraphs, and quoting passages from the argument that comes to mind that help support your explanations.
The Reader Response will be graded by a simple rubric you can see here, and must be done by the time we review the piece in class. Consider how you might use the Reader Responses to advance your work on the papers we’re working on.

Discussion 14.1: Week 14: More about Essay 3 Discussion: Analyzing Samples

Answer ONE of the following questions that has not been answered by a previous poster, unless they have all been answered once already. Also post a paragraph response to one of the other postings by your classmates. Make clear which comment you are responding to. You may agree, disagree, ask a question, or try to come up with a transition connecting two of the ideas in different postings. Please post by Thurs. 12/5 at midnight.

Students have asked me about what an introduction would look like for essay #3. Please see attached for introductions and the first body paragraph from some student samples of a literature review, one step in the process of writing the research paper, in Professor Mikolavich’s class (he’s developed the assignment working together with Professor Fischer). While these are not exactly the research paper, the students write with style and a unique voice to engage the readers, something you should strive for in your essay.

Choice 1: Describe this assignment, Essay 3 “Creative Research Paper” and how it is similar to and different from other assignments you have had. What are the basic requirements? What is your critical question? How might you organize different components, such as a review of the literature and field work?

Choice 2: Look again at the Student Samples excerpted from Proteus papers in Professor Fischer’s class. In particular, look at the interviews conducted for sample 1 and 2. For each one, how do you think this could be integrated into the overall research paper? Remember that these are actual excerpts from the papers.

Choice 3: Look again at the Student Samples excerpted from Proteus papers in Professor Fischer’s class. In particular, look at the interviews conducted for sample 3 and 5. For each one, how do you think this could be integrated into the overall research paper? Remember that these are actual excerpts from the papers.

Choice 4: Look again at the Student Samples excerpted from Proteus papers in Professor Fischer’s class. In particular, look at the interviews conducted for sample 6 and 7. For each one, how do you think this could be integrated into the overall research paper? Remember that these are actual excerpts from the papers.

Choice 5: Given the circumstance that your topic doesn’t lend itself well to observation or participation (for field work), you may need to write a fictional account based on the facts that you can find out. Look again at the Student Samples excerpted from Proteus papers in Professor Fischer’s class. In particular, look at the fictional reconstruction of the experience of an arranged marriage in sample 4, based on a photograph and family stories. How do you think this could be integrated into the overall research paper? Remember that these are actual excerpts from the papers. If you need to write a story for your participation/observation, how will you go about this? What factual evidence and research will you base this upon?

Choice 6: For the document Sample 1, “The Passive Problem,” look at the introduction and first body paragraph. How does Aidan make the introduction engaging and creative? How does he integrate his research in the body paragraph to support the main points of the paper? What would you say are the thesis statement and topic sentence(s), whether stated explicitly or implied?

Choice 7: For the document Sample 2, look at the introduction and first body paragraph. How does Maddie make the introduction engaging and creative? How does she integrate her research in the body paragraph to support the main points of the paper? What would you say are the thesis statement and topic sentence(s), whether stated explicitly or implied?

Choice 8: For the document, Sample 3, “A Culture of Scarcity,” look at the introduction and first body paragraph. How does Wendy make the introduction engaging and creative? How does she integrate her research in the body paragraph to support the main points of the paper? What would you say are the thesis statement and topic sentence(s), whether stated explicitly or implied?

peer’s post:( should write a paragraphs to response)

Choice 1:

Essay 3 tested on the ability to think creatively, beyond exhibiting the usual conventional research skills. The professor required me to show a deeper knowledge on the subject of my choice, by using a unique approach. For the first time in my school life, I went out to the field and did an interview for my classwork. I found the paper different from other research papers because I did not have to follow the normal academic format of writing a research paper. Normally, research papers require some paper structure such as abstract, introduction, limitations, result, among others. Often, I find research papers too serious and dismissive of personal reflections and observations. For this research, I found it exciting to be able to incorporate my observation using a first-person perspective. I have encountered research papers that used interviews but were evasive of personal observation. However, in essay 3, I was free to incorporate my interview in the research paper. I did not use the normal research structure which requires that the paper follows a specific outline. The similarity between essay 3 and other papers is that in both, we are required to use credible sources.

The basic requirements for this assignment were to write 6 to 8 pages of paper on any topic of my choice. It required me to incorporate a different kind of research, by conducting an interview, making observations, and also showing my participation. I would then incorporate my findings to the overall research paper supported by other library research sources. By departing from the ordinary research writing, I enjoyed doing the assignment.

My critical question for the assignment was: “Are the high rates of violence and mass shootings in the U.S related to gun control laws?”. I designed a questionnaire for my interview although I had to adjust while admitting it to my respondent. I borrowed an idea from the sample, Today Tracy, Tomorrow the World to include my interview in the research. I then incorporated the sources in a series of reflections to support my argument. I also incorporated a personal reflection to further strengthen my argument.
