Essay 1: Affirmative Action has been a divisive issue dating back to President L
Essay 1: Affirmative Action has been a divisive issue dating back to President Lyndon B. Johnson’s administration in the 1960s. The intent was to rectify past discrimination against some Americans based on sexual orientation, gender, race and religion by preventing current and future discrimination in employment, education and housing. Affirmative Action was supposed to be a mechanism to ‘level the playing field’ by creating equality and fairness for all Americans. Once full equity has been achieved the utilitarian nature of Affirmative Action would be appealed. Are we at a point in American society whereby, discrimination of any kind does not hinder some Americans? Does the mere existence of Affirmative Action give credence and viability to ‘reverse discrimination’ of the majority group in society?
