According to Charles Hale (2001), activist research is research that:
Helps us better understand the root causes of inequality, oppression, violence and related conditions of human suffering, AND
Is carried out, at each phase from conception through dissemination, in direct cooperation with an organized collective of people who are themselves subject to these conditions , AND
Is used, together with the people in question, to formulate strategies for transforming these conditions and to achieve the power necessary to make these strategies effective
In about 500 words, write an essay in which you describe and critically evaluate two pieces of activist research that we read in the week of March 15th. For each piece of research discuss the following:
(a) What was the objective of the research?
(b) What methods did the researcher use?
(c) How did the researcher cooperate with an organized collective?
(d) How did the researchers’ cooperation with the organized collective help or hinder their data collection and analysis?
(e) How successful was the research in terms of producing scientific knowledge?
(f) How successful was the research in terms of contributing to the aims of the organized collective to end inequality, oppression etc.?
(g) Critically evaluate the research. You can do this by either describing one or more weaknesses of the research (and offering one way in which this weakness could be strengthened) or by explaining one or more key methodological takeaways from the research that other researchers could learn from. Make sure the critical analysis is not an afterthought. As you’ll see from the rubric, the critical analysis constitutes 40% of your grade from this assignment, so you should devote at least one paragraph to analysis for each article.
General points about effective writing
Write with clarity and concision
1. Avoid wordiness. Don’t tell me a bunch of necessary stuff.
2. If you use any technical terms or jargon, explain them. (Especially pertinent advice for this assignment, as you’ll be graded on the extent to which you explain and apply the course concepts).
3. Make the structure of your paper easy to follow. Don’t jump around randomly. Help the reader see how you are moving from point to point. What ties this paragraph to the one before it? How is the point you are making now related to what you said above?
