One of Western Civilization’s dirty little secrets is the invention of disposable diapers and their impact on the environment. For the U.S. alone, disposable diapers require 200,000 trees every year and 3.4 billion gallons of fuel. They also require twice the water to make as it takes to wash cloth diapers. They are filling up the landfills with materials that take 500 years to degrade and contain numerous toxic chemicals, including toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene. Imagine if we disposed of all human waste in the landfill rather than through our sewer system that helps keep the environment sanitary! So, in the age of people worried about global warming, overuse of fossil fuels, cutting of rainforests, why do millennials insist on disposable diapers? What is the alternative? Cloth diapers or perhaps “diaper free” (check out http://diaperfreebaby.org/ (Links to an external site.) ) What are your thoughts on disposable diapers and alternatives? Let’s sniff this out! Do you dare?
