Please choose a primary source IMAGE from the Industrial Era related to Industrialization in some way (1870-1910). This should be a PHOTOGRAPH or POLITCIAL CARTOON. You will also use this image in your week 5 assignment so make sure to review those instructions. – This means no drawings, posters etc. Make sure it is a cartoon or a photograph taken with a camera. Keep it from the dates 1870-1910.

Remember that a primary source is a source from the time period/a first-hand account etc. Make sure that your primary image focuses on Industrialization itself and is not just any image from the time period (i.e. an image about Share-croppers or African American males voting or women fighting for the right to vote would fall into the time period, but are not about industrialization).

Once you have selected your image, you will complete a primary analysis of the image. Your primary analysis should include a copy of the actual image along with the source (APA format) for the image. Please use scholarly sources (.gov, .edu etc.) and not just random internet sources (such as infoplease, about.com, pinterest etc.). Good places to find primary images include www.loc.gov (search prints, photographs section) and www.NARA.gov.

The best place to go is http://www.loc.gov (library of Congress) and search the Prints and Photographs.

Also when searching in google you can limit your returns to government sites by searching for the following: Primary photographs industrialism site:gov OR Primary political cartoon industrialism site:gov. (then you can even click on IMAGES to have them pop up and review them)

Doing that or searching LOC brings up a TON of images with credible sources.

You will then write a 1-2 page analysis in PARAGRAPH form with an introduction paragraph, body paragraphs, and conclusion paragraph (no question and answer format) that addresses the following:

Discuss the people, activities, and objects in the photograph.

Discuss at least 3 things you can infer about life at the time of the photograph from the contents of the photograph you discussed in previous paragraph.

Identify 1-2 questions that the photograph raises in your mind and explain why you have those questions after looking at the photograph.

Discuss where you might could go to find answers to your questions.

Explain what event or issue inspired the cartoon? Are there any real people or places in the cartoon? Who/what are they? If not, what images are portrayed in the cartoon?

Identify the specific artistic techniques used in the cartoon (i.e., symbolism, analogy, exaggeration, labeling, and irony). What is the artist trying to show the reader by using these techniques?

What is the cartoonist’s point of view about the topic portrayed in the cartoon? Give examples to support your interpretation.

Is this cartoon persuasive? Explain why or why not. What other techniques could the artist have used to make this cartoon more persuasive?
