Research Paper
Students usually find the study of End of Life issues fascinating. To further your interest, you have an opportunity to explore a topic of your choice related to the course and write a research paper of four pages. In the introduction of your paper, let the reader know the purpose and why it is of interest. Five research articles are required for referencing and are to be from scholarly journals such as The Association for Death Education and Counseling, The American Psychological Association, The American Society on Aging, and various nursing and medical journals.
Include results of studies published on the issue/topic of the paper such as: how many participants, how done, and what was found, learned from the study. At least three Journal resources of the five should provide studies and results. Be sure to make the paper flow rather than be a collection of bits and pieces. Summarize your paper well so that it pulls together the information that is enlightening to the reader.
Writing Requirements:
All assignments including discussions require your best writing skills. This means that you must write your assignments with well-developed paragraphs, complete sentences, and good grammar. Do not use “text speak,” abbreviations, all caps, slang or vulgar language. Spelling and grammar count.

Plagiarism is the intentional or unintentional presentation of another person’s idea or product as one’s own. Plagiarism includes: copying verbatim all or part of another’s written work; using phrases, charts, figures without citing the source; paraphrasing ideas, conclusions, or research without citing the source. Guidance on how to avoid plagiarism can be found online at UMUC’s Effective Writing Center:
http://www.umuc.edu/writingcenter/plagiarism/
Format of documents:
Your writing assignments should be double-spaced. A recommended font is Times New Roman, with 12 font size and aligned left.

BOX 6-2 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Guidelines for Health Risk Communication

1. Accept and involve the public as a partner.

Tips:

•  Involve community stakeholders as early as possible in the decision-making process.

•  Develop communication materials with a focus on creating an informed public that can be actively involved in the response efforts.

2. Plan carefully and evaluate your efforts.

Tips:

•  Develop clear objectives about what your efforts hope to achieve.

•  Create risk communication materials and messages with a particular audience in mind. For example, parents, policy makers, and first responders will have different interests, responsibilities, and priorities.

•  Recruit and train spokespeople who are appropriate for and able to interact with the intended audience.

•  Pretest risk communication materials with the intended audience in order to ensure that the messages you are developing are appropriate and interpreted correctly.

•  Evaluate your communication efforts, identifying both what worked well and what needs to be improved.

3. Listen to the public’s specific concerns.

Tips:

•  Find out what your intended audience thinks, knows, and feels about the specific situation at hand.

•  Conduct research, including interviews, focus group discussions, and surveys, to identify the public’s concerns.

•  Recognize that people are often more interested in trust, credibility, competency, fairness, and compassion than in detailed (and often changing) mortality and morbidity statistics.

4. Be honest, frank, and open.

Tips:

•  Do not expect the public to view you as a credible source of information based on your credentials alone. In other words, you must work to establish and maintain the public’s trust.

•  Disclose accurate, science-based information about the specific crisis or risk in a timely manner, especially given the multimedia universe in which we currently live. Credibility and trust also hinge on the ability to communicate, react, and respond early.

•  Present an accurate current level of risk based on the best available information. Do not minimize or exaggerate risk.

•  Say what you know as well as what you do not know. In other words, it is important to not overly reassure the public, speculate, or lie. Instead, transparency is key in both acknowledging uncertainty and disseminating accurate information.

•  Create channels for disseminating accurate and timely information, such as hotlines and websites.

5. Work with other credible sources.

Tips:

•  Establish relationships with other organizations, agencies, etc. that have shared interests. Involve these entities in the planning process of a crisis communication strategy.

•  Identify other trustworthy individuals (i.e., university professors, physicians, local officials) who may serve as credible media spokespeople.

•  Coordinate communication efforts (both the development and release of risk information) with your collaborative partners. Such coordination is critical to ensure consistent messaging and continued trust by the public. Opposing messages will undermine trust, raise fear, and increase confusion held by the public.

6. Meet the needs of the media.

Tips:

•  Establish relationships with specific reporters and media outlets.

•  Be accessible to reporters.

•  Tailor risk communication information to the specific media channel. For example, clear and simple charts and graphs may be helpful for print media.

7. Speak clearly and with compassion.

Tips:

•  Use simple, nontechnical language. In particular, make sure to avoid the use of jargon.

•  Be consistent in your messaging. For example, if you are going to have more than one spokesperson, they should be trained to adhere to the same messages. Inconsistent messaging will lead to a loss of credibility with the intended audience and may increase their level of fear, anxiety, and uncertainty.

•  Write material to a fourth-grade reading level. The reading level of written materials can be assessed using readability formulas such as the SMOG formula. http://www.harrymclaughlin.com/SMOG.htm.

•  Address misinformation, stigmatization, and rumors promptly.

•  Include specific action steps that community members can take to protect themselves and their families.

•  Come across as open and empathetic to the public.

cycle 3 discussion size matters

Have you ever thought about the size of the U.S. national debt? Have you pondered the literal size or weight of it? How large is the U.S. national debt right now, and more important, how do you make sense of a number that large?

How high would the debt stack if it were represented with $1 bills? What if it were represented with the largest denomination in circulation today? How much area would the debt cover if it were represented with a single layer of $1 bills? Could you carpet the United States with its own debt? How much would the debt weigh if it were represented with $1 bills? What if it were represented with quarters?

How long would it take the country to pay off the national debt if everyone contributed at a certain rate? How does our national debt compare to the economy of another country? Use some international comparison to put it into perspective.

For this discussion, you will post at least twice – 1) an initial post, and then 2) a reply to a classmate.

For your initial post

Answer questions 1 and 2 below.

  1. Answer both parts:
    • Part a: How big is the national debt right now? Research this question online, post an answer and where you found the answer.
    • Part b: What is the population of the United States?
  2. Answer one of these questions:
    • Using the national debt figure that you found and the population figure, what is the amount of national debt per person in the U.S.?
    • If each person in the U.S. contributed $100 each year, how many years would it take to pay off the national debt?
    • If we wanted to pay off the national debt in 10 years, how much would each person have to pay per year?

Unelected Officials

  Unelected Officials

One branch of the American government, Congress, is made up of individuals elected by the people. Another branch of our government, the Presidency, is held by an elected official, but the majority of the members of the Presidential Cabinet are appointed to their positions (with the approval of Congress). The third branch of the government, the Judiciary, is made up of individuals who were all chosen by a President (though approved by Congress). Is it or is it not in the best interest of the people to have unelected officials in these positions of power?

·  Write a 500-750 word, APA style paper, exploring the distribution of power in the American federal government, and whether or not you believe it can effectively represent the will and the interests of the people it is meant to serve.

·  In your paper, explain your position and include the opposing position along with your rebuttal (of that opposing position).

·  Note: A rebuttal is a form of evidence that is presented to contradict other evidence that has been presented by an adverse party.

·  Include a title page and 3-5 references.  (not Wikipedia).
