This week, you should choose a paragraph or passage from either of the primary readings this week (Thomas Aquinas or Pope John Paul II). Focusing on the words on the page, tell me what you notice. I want you to practice the ability to let the words on the page speak for themselves, and to attempt to interpret their meaning without imposing your own perspectives. For close readings, you need to start simply with the words on the page: What are they saying? What words, phrases, images, rhetoric, or patterns (like repetition, contrasts, or similarities) stood out to you? Why? What do these words, phrases, images, rhetorical choices, etc. mean or imply? What specific words does the author choose to use – and what implications does that choice have for the interpretation of the text? How does this passage in particular showcase your author’s approach to the relationship of faith and reason (rationality)? Intellectual journal entries ought to be 400-500 words (of analysis – not including the passage you quote), use and cite at least one text from the course materials assigned for the current week

Politics Is Everywhere Visit: https://www.opensecrets.org/527s/ (Links to an external site.) and spend some time examining the makeup of 527 organizations by industry, sector, expenditure, and size over time. Here are the questions to consider. What groups are most represented? Are there any groups or organizations that seem underrepresented? How would you group the different types of 527 organizations? Look at the names of the different organizations. Is it always clear what a 527 stands for or who it represents? What political considerations might inspire some of the name choices you see? I would like for you to focus particularly on the last two questions. As with all discussions, you are responsible for one original posting and substantive responses (at least 25 words in each post) to at least 2 other students. *****respond to these 2 posts******* 1. Wow, it is really difficult to tell what an organization stands for by their name, though some are plain as day. For example “Pelosi for DNC” seems pretty straightforward, but “OMG WTF” is a headscratcher. I was pleased to see ActBlue was at the top of the expenditures and contributions list, but not surprised since they have such aggressive donor emails. A gun rights organization is called “2AVOTERS” and it took me a second to realize it was in regard to the 2nd Amendment. If one has been paying attention, it’s fairly obvious when a political group is represented. I noticed that not one Democratic organization used the word “Liberty” but three Republican orgs did. Democratic orgs tend to use the word “Progress” – nine of the orgs have that in their name and none of the GOP orgs did. I found it interesting that “Women’s Issues” was separate from “Human Rights”. I’m curious as to whether that’s to keep the abortion/birth control hot button topic separate. Another thing that popped out to me was that the largest sector was the “Idealogical/Single-Issue” sector. 2. After looking at the names on this list, it is often difficult to tell just who the groups are and what they stand for from looking at their names. While some are obvious there are some that are not, such as Level the Playing Field, not sure what field they are trying to level. The largest sector seems to be ideological/single issue which I am fairly sure are funded by lobbyists and special interest groups to try and bring issues to the public eye that might have an impact either on elections or a bill coming through. Interesting to see how much of them money is provided by unions, makes one wonder if the people joining those unions and paying dues can tell you what their money is used for when given to a 527. I also think it is interesting how few of the names reflect any party affiliation, even though most of the issues are largely driven by one or the other.

What, in your view, are the 2 most important domestic policy issues facing the United States in 2021? Explain why you consider these the most important issues and describe what steps government officials could take to address them? There are no right or wrong answers – just be sure to justify your answers. ****** you must post at least one original post and reply to at least 2 other students. Each post must be at least 35 words.****** Reply to these 2 posts: 1. In my perspective, the two domestic policy issues that the United States is currently facing is gun control and social media political advertising. These two are what I see potential unifying factors when dealt with properly. To further elaborate on gun control, many wave their second amendment rights to prevent government officials from taking any steps further in laying down proper and strict gun control laws. However, guns bring violence, and this has been seen in many cases with mass shootings nationwide. There needs to be proper regulation on who is allowed to purchase which kinds of guns, how they are required to store these guns so that children don’t have access to them, and any additional requirements necessary that will ensure a higher security of our nation. With regards to political advertising on social media, I have seen swarms of political ads and it has caused the American citizens to be more polarized. With this intense polarization against political parties, our country becomes divided, weak, and full of hate and violence. With the simple restriction on social media platforms from posting any political advertisements, citizens will have the opportunity to become informed through trusted unbiased sources like the news. In implementing these two regulations, our country will take a strong step forward toward unity, strength, and prosperity. 2. Climate change and Gun control is in my own view is the two most important domestic policy issues facing the United State. For Climate change the evidence is clear main cause burning fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal. when burnt it release carbon dioxide into the air causing the planet to heat up. The Government needs to step up with some sort of regulations to that effect and create alternative measures to creating energy that way it leaves the environment less toxic. For gun control, there has to be a plan to regulate who should posses one and also limit amount of possessions, type of which is possessed etc. Because for the greater good, it is becoming out control where there have been cases of mass shooting, kids playing with them there by causing accidental discharge. The government need to come up with some regulation that will reduce if not stop, to managed, reduce the risk of owning a gun.
