Introduction

For this assignment, you will be writing an essay about what it means to be human in order to evaluate what has been learned throughout the class.

In the first discussion from the Week 1 module, we answered the question, “What does it mean to be human?”. Refer back to that discussion post. What did you say? Do you agree with what you said, or has it changed? How would you answer this question now?

In this essay, compare and contrast how you originally answered the “What does it mean to be human?” question to how you would answer it at now. Be sure to include a discussion on how the remains and artifacts of Australopithecus and Homo help us answer the question, “What does it mean to be human?”.  What have you learned? Has anything changed from the beginning of the class to the end? What do you conclude about what it means to be human?

Format

All questions must be addressed in essay format. All answers to questions must have examples illustrating them. It is recommended to format the paper with the questions as headings to make sure they are addressed in the paper.

This assignment must be written using a word processing program and saved either as .doc or .docx. ASA format is required. All information must be cited in ASA in the text and at the end of the paper. It is expected that at least one reference from the course is used, such as the textbook or lab book.

Evaluation

This assignment is worth 50 points. You will be evaluated on the quality of your answers, meaning:

  • did you answer the questions?
  • did you use examples to illustrate your point?
  • did you make your point using scientific information?
  • were the points and examples scientifically accurate and illustrate your ideas?
  • is it well written (sentences are constructed well enough so that I understand your ideas, grammar/spell checked and I don’t have to rewrite your paper to read it, used the text and other references, cited authored material)?
  • used a word processing program?

Assignment 3: Operation, Technology, and Management Plan (with Financials)

Due Week 8 and worth 100 points

This assignment consists of two sections: the Word document and your business plan financials. Note: You must submit both sections as separate files for the completion of this assignment.

Use the NAB Company Portfolio (see Required Course Files in Week 1).

Write a 4-8-page paper in which you provide the following information below.

Operations Plan (1–2 pages)

Note: Remember to assign a dollar amount to each operational cost you find, as you will need these figures for your income statement and cash flow in Week 8.

  1. Create an operations plan for your NAB company using the template in the text as a guide (p. 214 | Operations Plan Preparation Form). Extract appropriate information from the NAB Company Portfolio, where applicable. Other required items in the template should be filled in using your personal preferences.
        • Note: Most of the research pertaining to the hints provided here can be found in the NAB company portfolio.
        • Hints: Consider whether you will rent or buy your facilities or outsource production to an existing company.
        • Hints: One of your biggest expenses as a startup non-alcoholic beverage company will be transitioning from a small-batch prototype of your beverage to production on a large scale. Research the equipment you will need (vats, refrigerators, burners, ovens, bottling equipment, and so on), whether you will rent or buy, how you will maintain and clean the equipment, and so forth. Consider how you will ensure quality control. What capacity do you intend to reach?
        • Hints: Deliberate your inventory control. Where do your supplies come from and what is your turnaround time to produce your beverage once you have received an order?
        • Hints: Consider your distribution method. Refer back to your notes for the SWOT analysis assignment in Week 2 of the class.
        • Hints: How will you stay abreast of new developments in your industry? What new products do you have in development now, in addition to your flagship product?
  2. Describe your research and development activities and explain how they will contribute to the company.

Technology Plan (1–2 pages)

3. Create a technology plan for your NAB company using the template in the text as a guide (p. 227 | Technology Plan Preparation Form). Extract appropriate information from the NAB Company Portfolio, where applicable. Other required items in the template should be filled in using your personal preferences.

        • Hints: Consider the type of technology your company will use to conduct the following activities: managing personnel; taking, fulfilling, and tracking orders; managing inventory; communicating with customers and providing customer service; and producing your beverage.

Management and Organization (1–2 pages)

  1. Create a management plan for your NAB company using the template in the text as a guide (p. 248 | Management Plan Preparation Form). Extract appropriate information from the NAB Company Portfolio, where applicable. Other required items in the template should be filled in using your personal preferences.
  2. Using the flow charts on page 242 as a guide, outline your company’s management hierarchy. Note: Charts or diagrams must be imported/included in the MS Word document.

Create an ethics and social responsibility plan (1-2 pages)

  1. Describe the ways in which your company is committed to being a good corporate citizen.
    • Hints: Consider the following areas:
      • Creating jobs
      • Following the laws of every jurisdiction in which your company operates
      • Fair and honest treatment of employees
      • Non-discrimination of employees and increasing diversity of your work force
  • Hints: If your company is designed as a social venture—in which you have a primary purpose of achieving a social or environmental goal—describe what that goal is and what aspects of your company are designed to reach that goal. Provide a rationale for why you have or have not chosen this to be a social venture.

2. Discuss how your company’s activities will affect the environment and identify the steps you will take to mitigate any negative impacts.

        • Hints: As a beverage company, consider such issues as your choice of packaging, disposal of bottles/packages by consumers, and your use of resources, such as water in areas where water may be scarce.

3. Determine any health issues/claims related to the product you are making, whether negative or positive. Suggest the strategy your company will use to mitigate any negative issues and to ensure any positive claims are true.

Section 2: Business Plan Financials (MS Excel worksheets bundled with course textbook)

For year one, submit the entire completed “Business Plan Financials” Excel document based on feedback from week 7 discussion and information from your business plan.

Format your assignment according to these formatting requirements:

Patient Information:

 DW 45 Caucasian Male

S.

CC:Back Pain

HPI: David reports suffering from lower back pain. The pain
started approximately one month ago. It is a burning shooting pain that
radiates to his left leg. Sometime the pain is associated with numbness
in the left foot and tingling in the left leg. He mostly notices the
pain when he’s been standing for an extended period of time. Standing
makes the pain worse but sitting seems to help. David has tried over the
counter medications including Tylenol, Motrin, and Aleve but none of
those seem to make a difference. He’s also recently found some
stretching videos online that seem to help reduce the number of what he
refers to as ‘flare ups’ each day. He rates the pain as a 7/10 when he
experiences it but denies pain at this time. 

Current Medications: None

Allergies: None

PMHx: Childhood immunizations are up to date. Received the flu shot last week. Last Tetanus 2014.
Soc Hx: David is a construction worker and cleans pools on the
weekend. He is married with 2 adult children. David SCUBA dives and sky
dives recreationally but hasn’t recently. He denies any use of alcohol
or recreational drugs. David was a pack/day smoker for 12 years but quit
15 years ago. David never goes to the doctor but regularly monitors his
blood pressure at his local pharmacy. He does not have health
insurance. 

Fam Hx: Father: deceased at 81- stroke. Mother: deceased at 83
Alzheimer’s disease. Brother: deceased at 32- suicide. Sister: 41-
Breast CA at 30. 3 other sisters and 2 brothers living. No other
pertinent family history. 

ROS: 

GENERAL:  No weight loss, fever, chills, weakness or fatigue.

HEENT:  Eyes:  No visual loss, blurred vision, double vision or yellow sclerae. 

Ears, Nose, Throat:  No hearing loss, sneezing, congestion, runny nose or sore throat.

CARDIOVASCULAR:  No chest pain, chest pressure or chest discomfort. No palpitations or edema.

RESPIRATORY:  No shortness of breath, cough or sputum.

NEUROLOGICAL:  No headache, dizziness, syncope, paralysis, ataxia. No
change in bowel or bladder control. Numbness noted on occasion to left
lower leg and foot and tingling the radiates up and down his left leg.
Weakness when standing for long periods.

MUSCULOSKELETAL:  Lower burning back pain that radiates to the left leg.

O.

Physical exam: From head-to-toe, include what you see, hear, and
feel when doing your physical exam. You only need to examine the systems
that are pertinent to the CC, HPI, and History. Do not use “WNL” or “normal.” You must describe what you see. Always document in head to toe format i.e. General: Head: EENT: etc. 

VS: BP 128/76; P 77; R 22; T 97.8; 02 98% Wt 220lbs; Ht 70”

General–Pt appears in good health with a apple shaped abdomen. Appropriate. Alert, oriented.

Cardiovascular–PMI is in the 5th inter-costal space at the mid
clavicular line. S1,S2. No murmur. No edema. Good radial and DP pulses.
Cap refill <3secs.

Pulmonary— Lungs are clear to auscultation and percussion bilaterally.

Neurological— Good strength in all ext against resistance. Able
to lift legs bilaterally and hold. Pain in left buttock and lower back
when lifting left leg off the bed. Differentiates between sharp and dull
sensations throughout both lower extremities. No numbness or tingling
at this time. 

Musculoskeletal –Complains of pain in lower back and left buttock
when lifting left leg off bed. Describes pain in lower back when
walking on toes and heels. Complains of pain when asked to stand from a
squatting position. 

Diagnostic results:Diagnostic results: MRI shows herniated disk at L1-L2.

A.

Differential Diagnosis:

1) Herniated disk. This can cause nerve root irritation that may travel below the knee (Dains, 2019).

2) Sciatica. The most common cause is a herniated vertebral disk or
spinal stenosis (Mayo Clinic, 2019)Low levels of physical activity and
obesity increase a patient’s risk of radiating low back pain (Shiri,
2013). Occupations that require twisting and bending or carrying heavy
loads can lead to sciatica pain(Mayo Clinic, 2019).

3) Musculoskeletal strain. With this type of injury, patients often
report pain that is exacerbated by sitting or standing for long periods
of time (Dains, 2019). Patients often describe relief from pain with
rest, as seen in this case (Dains, 2019).

4)  Spinal Stenosis. Spinal stenosis will result in pain while
walking or standing for long periods of time that often gets better with
rest or forward flexion of the spine  (Dains, 2019).  It is most often
seen in patients over the age of 50 (Dains, 2019).

5) Tumor. This is unlikely, but possible. Patients with tumors
usually present with weight loss, fatigue, weakness and anemia (Dains,
2019). 

Primary Diagnosis/Presumptive Diagnosis: Herniated Disk and related sciatica pain.
