You are to write a 400-450 word summary of the arguments made in the passages below. Your summary must not contain more than 50 words directly quoted from the text. The main task of the assignment is to formulate the argument and understand it in your own words. Your summary should be broken up into the following three paragraphs:
Identify the thesis of the argument. That is, what is the author’s point? This should be stated in a single sentence and underlined. (Ex. In the passage Mary argues that she should receive a higher allowance than her brother)
What is the justification(s) or reason(s) for the thesis? This will be the main body of your summary. It is designed to show why the author thinks her/his thesis is true. (Ex. Mary has three reasons for her position. First, she is older than her brother and requires more money for her social and leisure activities. Second, she does more chores than her brother. Etc.)
Finally, state whether you agree or disagree with the argument in question and why. Are the reasons given for the author’s thesis good or bad, true or untrue? Are you convinced or not? (Ex. I agree with Mary’s reasons for why she should receive a higher allowance. If someone does more work than someone else, he or she deserves to be rewarded accordingly)
