Choose one of the following 2 prompts. Follow instructions carefully: if you just turn in a nice essay on the topic in general, you will get a failing grade. Whichever of these you choose, the result will NOT look like a standard five-paragraph essay with an intro and body paragraphs and a conclusion. That’s not what I want!
I Masculinities
There are organizations trying to help men cope better with society’s mixed messages around masculinity, and there’s also pushback against the very notion of the existence of “toxic masculinity,” by people and organizations claiming that society is trying to vilify or extinguish traits that are “essential” or “natural” to men.
I am NOT asking you simply to take a position on this issue. What I want is for you analyze the discourse around it.
News sites online, blogs and vlogs, social media and so on are full to the brim of people discoursing on this notion.
Do some surfing. Take notes. Make sure you keep all the urls, dates and so on, because you’re going to have to create citations for your sources.
WRITE A NARRATIVE OF YOUR SEARCH: where did you look, what platforms, what search terms did you use? Did you do it all at once or over a couple of days? This should be a good 6-7 sentences long at least.
Choose two or three items – they can all be the same format, i.e., all blog posts on a blog aggregator like Medium, or infotainment site like Jezebel or The Root, all news articles, all Twitter threads, whatever – or they can be different. Ephemera like Snapchat won’t do, though, because I have to be able to look at your sources. Describe each in detail, explaining what you found effective or not-so-good. Each gets two paragraphs – one the general description, one the analysis of what works/doesn’t. You can compare pro and con sources, or compare pro and pro, or con and con – your choice.
In your analysis, use at least some terms we’ve introduced, e.g., intersectionality, heterosexism/heteronormativity, gender, gender expression, gender identity, and the like.
In a final paragraph, tell me how your research left you thinking & feeling, and your thoughts/hopes about the future of this issue.
Create correct Works Cited entries for the sources you choose. You can use MLA or APA style. The CSI Library website explains these, as does the Purdue OWL. In some cases, online citation generators may help. I have used the free version of Citation Machine www.citationmachine.net with success in the past.
II Intersectionality, privilege, and COVID.
Your WGS text boldly claimed that intersectionality and privilege are two concepts that Women’s Studies developed/fostered that have now made it out into mainstream society, helping us all understand how power works a little better. Of course, I long to find that this is true, but is it? If it is, how completely have intersectional analyses and awareness of privilege permeated public awareness? Are there cultural locations/identities that YOU care about that are or are not being addressed adequately? Let’s use the talk around COVID as our test case.
You can use news sites, blogs, vlogs, social media, your choice for this project.
Do some surfing/searching around “Privilege and COVID” and/or “intersectionality and COVID” (you should probably choose one or the other, but you could try both). Take notes; keep track of URLS, dates etc. because you’re going to have to create citations for your sources.

Your grade will be based on:
Clarity and detail of narration, description, and final reflective paragraph
Effective use of WGS terms in analysis
Completeness and correctness of Works Cited
While I expect you to use English for Academic Purposes, which includes correct syntax, grammar, spelling, and punctuation, it will play a relatively minor part in your grade. I am not interested in your using an academic tone, so you don’t have to try to sound like the Essay Robot in your writing here. Moreover, it is evident that in certain situations one can find it apparent that — the Essay Robot is an awful writer.
