Details:

The purpose of this assignment is to use pivot tables and pivot charts to aggregate data and to explain the process used for data aggregation.

For this assignment, you will use the “Claims 2” dataset. Use Excel pivot tables and pivot charts for this exercise.

Part 1:

Create a dashboard describing the data by age group (e.g., 21-30 yrs, 31-40 yrs, 41-50 yrs, 51-60 yrs, and 61-70 yrs). The dashboard should include the graphs and charts listed in the locations described. The dashboard should be a separate tab in Excel that only includes the five items below. A sample layout is provided below the dashboard description.

  1. Top Left: Bar graph showing the average number of ER visits for each of the five age groups. Show the actual average values above each bar.
  2. Middle Left: Bar graph showing the average number of procedures for each of the five age groups. Show the actual average values above each bar.
  3. Bottom Left: Bar graph showing the average claim cost for each of the five age groups. Show the actual average values above each bar.
  4. Top Right: Pie chart showing the percent of the total sum of all claim costs for each of the five age groups. Show the actual percent values of each slice.
  5. Bottom Right: Line graph showing the percent of each age group that has one or more ER visits. Show the actual percent values of each group. To create this chart, first create a new calculated column, named “Has ER Visit,” that is equal to 1 when the patient has had one or more ER visits; otherwise 0. HINT: The average of a 0-1 column is a percent. Refer to the example in the resource “Visual Representation of Data Screenshot: Preview of the Excel Dashboard.”

Part 2:

Interpret the dashboard and the story it is attempting to tell users by writing a 250-word summary that clearly describes the merits of each of the charts used on the dashboard. For example, discuss why a pie chart might be more appropriate than a bar graph for highlighting the information you want key stakeholders to obtain by studying that content on the dashboard. Include specific discussion about why each specific chart is used to illustrate the data it represents.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

This assignment uses a grading rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

A balanced scorecard helps organizations measure their performance through all parts of their business, including financials, customer service, internal business processes, and potential for learning and growth (Daft, 2016). The advantage of a balance scorecard is that it can help an organization identify issues, that may cause them to not meet their goals. An organization may have poor financial performance, and the balanced scorecard can help identify if it is due to a customer service or internal process issue. All goals might not be linked and depend on each other’s performance, but the organization will have a better understanding of how one area effects another.
My main customer service measure would be based on a customer service survey that is offered to all customers, either by website, email, or phone call. The survey would include cleanliness of the store, friendliness of the employees, wait time at check out, ease of finding products, store layout, and product quality. This survey would allow for issues to be brought up right away and to track trends. Another aspect of customer service would be internal metrics like staffing, average checkout time, and amount of time items are out of stock. Staffing would be measured by how many hours is the store staffed with the optimal number of staff members. Average checkout time would be based on how fast from first scan to receipt printing. This goal can be based on the average checkout time company wide and adjusted for improved performance. Tracking cleanliness of stores would be based on a cleaning checklist and would have to be manually audited by management throughout the day.
These goals are all customer service focused, but can tie into other sections of the balanced scorecard. If customers complain that an item is always out of stock, it can help identify a problem with the supply chain or inventory control processes. Optimal staffing isn’t just about customer service, but also financial performance. Staffing has to be adequate enough to keep customers happy, but low enough to not be wasteful.

In January 2018, scientists published a research article showing the cloning of 2 long-tailed macaques, using the same technique that was used to clone Dolly the sheep in 1996.  The technique, called somatic cell transfer, or SCNT, involves removing the nucleus from an unfertilized egg and replacing it with the nucleus from a mature cell, before stimulating the cell to divide as if it were an embryo, and implanting it into a surrogate mother.

Since humans are in the primate family, it has been hypothesized that this technique could potentially be used to clone humans in the future1.  Additionally, the same kind of technique has been used by scientists to clone embryonic stem cells from adults2, with the hope of someday being able to grow transplantable organs, perfectly matched to an individual, thereby eliminating the need for organ donation waiting lists and the possibility of never finding a match.
