full car detailing services

PK Village offers, in select locations, full car detailing services. Using a proprietary app, customers make reservations before 10:00PM for the next day. Upon dropping their vehicle for service, customers are offered transportation to destinations located within the service area (5 miles).

Customers are notified though the app when their vehicles are ready for pick-up. They can then confirm pick-up time and location.

Reservations are taken for service starting at 6:30 AM. The last reservation is taken for 3:00 PM. Customers are promised to have their vehicles ready by 8:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. This service is not offered on Sundays.

PK Village offers six different types of detailing services. The estimated time to complete these services, as well as their observed percentages are shown in the table below.

Based on reliable forecasts, the manager of one of PK Village’s detailing shops is expecting the throughput shown below for the last week of January.

PK Village employs a mix of full and part-time detailers. Full time detailers work Monday through Saturday in 8-hour shifts (including a one-hour beak). Part time detailers work 4-hour shifts without breaks. On a fully-allocated basis, the hourly costs of full-time detailers is $11.75. Part-time detailers’ cost is 15% higher.

Deliverables:

Create an Excel spreadsheet to estimate the number of FTEs required every day of the week and produce a graph showing vehicle throughput and FTE requirements over the planning period.

Prepare a letter addressed to the operations manager of PK Village’s Auto Detailing Shop with your staffing recommendation for the week being planned. The note should have sections (a) describing the opportunity or problem, (b) listing assumptions made in the analysis, and (c) explaining the methodology used, along with (d) justified recommendations.
The most relevant recommendation is a staffing plan for the upcoming week (combination of full-time and part time detailers), justified on cost. Note that the number of full time employees is fixed for the entire week.

Hampton v. United States

While working an undercover detail in a neighborhood known for drug activity, you notice a vehicle stopped at the intersection waiting for the light to change. The man in the vehicle makes eye contact with you. You approach his vehicle and begin carrying on a conversation with him. You ask him if he needs anything, and he responds by asking, “What do you have?” You ask him what he is looking for, and he tells you that he is looking to score. You show him a small bag containing a white powdery substance; he asks how much, and you respond, “20 dollars.” He hands you a $20-bill, and you give him the bag and tip your hat to signal that the transaction was completed. At this time, the man drives off and is stopped a block away by a marked unit. The individual is placed under arrest for drug possession and purchasing drugs, and he is taken to jail.

The individual is charged with possession of a controlled substance. At his trial, he claimed that he was a victim of entrapment by the police. His claim of entrapment failed. He was found guilty and sentenced to serve 5 years in jail.

In a 3-5 page paper (not including the cover and reference pages), address the following:

Research and summarize Supreme Court decisions that specifically address entrapment.
Suggested cases for review:
Read about the Hampton case.
Read about the Jacobsen case.
Summarize both cases in paragraph form. Include the following in your analysis of each case:

Was the entrapment defense valid in this case? Why or why not? Defend your answer.
Is providing the opportunity for someone to commit a crime the same as entrapment? Why or why not?

Assignment 3: Case Study—Merger and Acquisition

Throughout this course, you will review scenarios involving Company A, which has been acquired by Company B. Company A was founded in 1956 in Mobile, Alabama. The average age of its workforce is 57 and it is comprised of 40% Caucasian and 85% male. Company B was founded in 1997 in San Francisco, California. The average age of its workforce is 35 and it is comprised of 45% Caucasian and 50% male.

These two companies have been staunch competitors in the marketplace for several years and the employees of Company A are resentful of integrating with their former rival. There are many strategic and ethical challenges involved in this acquisition. A few of the goals of the acquisition project are listed below:

  • Managing the Communication and Information Sharing:
    • The company wants to keep employees informed of how the acquisition will impact them.
    • The company wants to be sure that they provide enough information to satisfy the employees, but not provide so much that the employees feel overwhelmed.
    • The company wants to be sure that the timing of the communication matches their execution of the changes within the two organizations.
  • Managing the Consolidation and Changes:
    • There is no doubt that there will be layoffs as a result of the acquisition. The company wants to do what is best for the acquisition in a way that inflicts the least amount of harm to the existing employees.
    • The company wants to make the decisions about who to layoff in the fairest way possible.
    • The company wants to try and limit exposure to potential discrimination (age and gender) stemming from the layoffs.
  • Managing the Relocations of Some the Employees:
    • Another impact of acquisitions is that employees may be asked to relocate in order to maintain employment in the newly formed organization.
    • The company wants to manage the expenses and potential disruption with the relocations.
    • The company wants to assess relocations verses hiring new employees locally.

Let us look at the role and responsibilities of HR managers regarding managing the company’s goals related to the recent acquisition.
