Movie Activity
Watch the movie: “The motorcycle diaries.” Then pick two of the questions at the end of the tourist behavior lecture and answer it in a substantial post. Here are the questions again just in case:
Ernesto and Alberto immerse themselves in each destination – they interact with and engage locals in conversation and learn from all of them. Would you characterize this as a typical aspect of tourism? Would you classify this as part of adventure travel?
Ernesto & Alberto incorporated their interests and passions (medicine and service) into their adventure by volunteering at the leper colony. How would you incorporate your interests and passions into your adventure? Would that be a ‘vacation’ you would decide to take? Why or why not?
Consider the transformation of Alberto and Ernesto – what were they like at the beginning of the movie compared to the end? How do you feel about that transformation? What created the transformation?
Ernesto and Alberto changed during their travel experiences because they did not passively experience the countries and cultures they visited. Instead, they became active participants in the experience. Consider different forms of travel and travel motivations: List some examples of destinations and/or attractions you believe would provide a similar experience to Alberto & Ernesto’s, and some that would provide an opposite experience
Tourism is often referred to as a “smokestackless industry” because of the misperception that it doesn’t create any environmental impacts. Does the same misperception exist for the social impacts of tourism? Is tourism an equalizer among rich & poor, or is it a dividing line?
Ernesto: “What do we leave behind when we cross a frontier? Each moment seems split in two: melancholy for what is left behind, and the excitement of entering a new land.”
Referring to the motorcycle:
Ernesto: “Why don’t we dump this thing? It’s nothing but trouble.”
›Alberto: “Oh yea? And walk the whole continent on foot, genius?”
›Ernesto: “Yes. We’d see more, meet more people…and you could drop some pounds.”
Referring to their conversation with the mining couple:
›Woman: “Are you looking for work?”
›Ernesto: “No, we’re not looking for work.”
›Woman: “No? Then why are you traveling?”
›Ernesto: “We travel just to travel.”
Ernesto: “How is it possible to feel nostalgia for a world I never knew?
