Identifying Fallacies

A good site to check out is Logically Fallacious:
http://logicallyfallacious.com/ (Links to an external site.)
Once you learn the names of the major logical fallacies, you will probably start noticing them all over the place,
including in advertisements, movies, TV shows, and everyday conversations. This can be both fascinating and
frustrating, but it can certainly help you to avoid certain pitfalls in reasoning that are unfortunately very
common.
Reflect: Search through common media sources looking for examples of fallacies. Some common places to
find fallacies include advertisements, opinion pieces in news media, and arguments about politics, religion, and
other controversial issues. You may also notice fallacies in your daily life.
Write: Present three distinct informal logical fallacies you have discovered in these types of sources or in your
life. Make sure to identify the specific fallacy committed by each example. Explain how the fallacies were used
and the context in which they occurred. Then, explain how the person should have presented the argument to
have avoided committing this logical error.
Try to look for examples outside of politics, because using political examples is far too easy to do. Be creative
in looking for your fallacy examples.

Radical Revision and Reflection

A radical revision is revising (changing) something to create new meaning, provide a different perspective, and
or to impact the reader in a different way. You are look at something in a different way, almost taking it in a
different direction.
Summary of Assignment: You will recreate an important scene from the short story This Blessed House
Purpose of the Assignment: The narrator is one of the key components of any story. In this assignment, your
goal is to see how changing the narrator—from Sanjeev to Twinkle— changes the meaning of the story. What
are twinkle’s thoughts, perspectives, and or experiences through her eyes?
Part 1. Preparation

  1. Read This Blessed House and choose an important passage in the story.
  2. This can be a turning point in the plot, a key moment of character development, a key moment in the story
(exposition), or something else—but be prepared to justify the passage you have chosen.
  3. This passage should present a single unified scene, a complete piece of the story, a complete reflection in
the mind of the character, etc… You choose a beginning and an end point but strive to find a passage that
    stands on its own.
Annotate the passage. Mark up the passage, making notes that explains: What is happening. Why you think
it’s happening. What are the important symbols, actions, changes, etc.
Rewrite the passage from Twinkle’s point of view. This will entail different elements, depending on the passage
you have chosen, but may include things like:
  4. Changing the scene. The scene will have to follow Twinkle’s point of view, instead of Sanjeev’s.
  5. Changing the perspective. Telling the story through Twinkle’s perspective.
  6. Rewriting the internal thought processes from Sanjeev’s to Twinkle’s.
  7. Changing the important symbols in the work. Certain things stand out to Sanjeev and are important for how
he views the unfolding story. What things are important to Twinkle? What kinds of things would be important
symbols for a story told from her perspective?
  8. Do not just replace ‘Sanjeev’ with ‘Twinkle’. These characters think, act, grow, change and see the world in
fundamentally different ways. You will need to create Twinkle’s point of view in your writing. It’s not a simple
    matter of replacement.
PLEASE NOTE: Making few changes, by just changing a few words in a couple of places is not enough.
  9. Reflect. In 300 to 400 words, explain the following:
o the changes you and your group made,
o why you made them, and
o the impact you think the changes had on the meaning of the story.
    Submission Guidelines
  10. Copy and paste all the parts of this assignment into ONE document. Please present the information in the
following order and format with the following titles for each section:
  11. The Passage. A copy, retype, or screen shot of the passage you chose to rewrite.
  12. Explanation of Choices Made. Provide an explanation of why you chose that specific passage. Describe the
scene (include the page number) and why you chose it. Include how you came to the decision of which
passage to use. Three to four (3-4) sentences are fine.
  13. Annotations. This section must include your annotations of the passage. These are the actual notes you
    made on the passage.
  14. Rewritten Passage. Provide your rewritten passage. It should be clear what was rewritten and what was left.
Maybe bold or italicize the change you made to passage.
  15. Reflection.

Annotated Bibliography ( Philosophy). The annotated bibliography is a list of sources with annotations, listed in alphabetical order. An annotation is a one or two paragraph summary and analysis of a source. As an introduction to the research paper, students will write a six page annotated bibliography on the topic they have chosen for their research paper. An annotated bibliography gives an account of the research that has been done on a given topic and is excellent preparation for a research project. Like any bibliography, an annotated bibliography is a list of research sources, but each annotation should include three parts: a summary, an evaluation of the text, and a reflection on its applicability to their research. Annotated bibliographies are instruments to help you formulate a thesis.

  • My topic is ‘Ethics in the juvenile justice system’. There is so many kids I feel like that are charged as adults and in today’s society I just feel like they aren’t noticed as much because they are children and etc.

Research Paper:The major writing assignment, however, will be the research paper, a conventional 12-15 page research essay (3000-3750 words).  Students will create a research paper/project appropriate to their discipline, using a scholarly MLA format.  Students must use academically valid sources.  Students should use an original viewpoint or idea, and present a persuasive, well-reasoned argument.  Students must submit a formal outline with their bibliography for review prior to the due date of the paper.  At the 400 level, this paper must present an “original perspective” on the topic at hand. See “research project” parameters below.  The research essay is an original essay where the student poses a research question, gathers materials, focuses the research, shapes the argument, and frames the material in relation to their chosen case scenario that is representative of their major. For this 12-15 page essay, students will explain the code of ethics of their major or prospective profession and use the code of ethics to guide their decision making process toward the best resolution of an ethical dilemma. The final version of the essay will take the form of a proposal to resolve the issue addressed to the appropriate party.  Students will explore and build on this issue through independent research and through informal dialogue with faculty members in their major. Students should choose a topic that is relevant to their major or prospective profession, perform first-hand research, frame the topic with readings and present a comprehensive paper. In other words, a psychology major would choose one case scenario, and then, using the APA or ACA code of ethics along with other research, describe the ethical conflict, apply the decision making process, and develop and justify a proposed ethical solution (or several alternative solutions, if applicable).  Sources should be cited from a variety of types of texts (books, journals, websites, etc.) with a full works cited page. The essay should have a clear thesis statement in the introduction, and a clearly flowing argument with sufficient supporting examples, quotes, discussion and analysis. (20% of final grade).
