I’m studying for my Writing class and need an explanation.Capitalist Industrial Society – pp.121-129, 132-135, 149-152This is a lengthy article (a whole chapter from a textbook actually) that details women’s place in U.S history before and after the Industrial Revolution. I highlighted portions that clearly defines women as second-class citizens. As is typical of earlier research (which still continues currently), the “standard” of woman is white and middle or upper class. While women of color are mentioned in this article, the examples are mostly African American women who are presented in an adjunct fashion. – Pick out parts that resonate for you in this piece and explain why on the discussion board. Be thorough in your answer, tying it back to the article points. – And then comment on THREE of your fellow students’ responses too! Be kind and respectful in your responses. Remember to tie in the article when thinking about your post as well as your replies to other students!First friend resound:What resonated with me the most in the article “Capitalist Industrial Society” was when it went into how the wage was determined on gender and race one was. A male would earn more money than a woman or a white male may earn more money than a Hispanic male. This was not a fair way of determining the amount of money that one would receive. This is what is called class inequality and the sad thing is that it still exists today, this is something that should be fixed and have workers earn the same amount regardless of gender and race.Second friend resound:I think one major aspect of this article that really resonated and stuck with me was how drastically roles in the family dynamic changed. In the 17th and 18th Century, families worked together to earn a living and survive, and a lot of the parenting roles were shared between father and mother. Furthermore there was a lot of community involvement in childcare, and women were not solely focused on child rearing and were not seen as weak or asexual. Then primarily due to technological advancement and economic growth all of those values changed. During the 1940s-60s women were then forced and pushed into a new model. The article referred to it as “the cult of domesticity” in which women’s sole focus were on the house, the children and responsibility of pleasuring her husband. Women sacrificed their individualism and self in order to put her husband and family first. Overall I was blown away of how society, and a changing economy had so much influence on shaping the standards of the ideal women.Third friend resound:I feel like the biggest subject that resonated with me are the different examples in gender division labor. In the article “Capitalist Industrial Society” in the section, Gender Division of Labor, it talked about the different jobs that were categorized as either “feminine” or “masculine.” The article gave some pretty good examples like how teaching was at one point considered a male job then it slowly turned into female job and librarian was a female job at one point then turned male. It painted a small picture of how those jobs were either feminine or masculine and then transitions to the other. That way of thinking, certain jobs are “feminine” and others are “masculine”, still happens to this day, and it’s ridiculous because we are decades past the time of the article. Like for example being a nurse is still considered a “feminist” job because woman are seen as the caretaker, so a male nurse is seen as less. I feel like some people see a male nurse is a person that could not make it as a doctor so settled to be a nurse. But if I ever ended up in the hospital I don’t care if you’re male or female nurse; I care about whether or not you can do your job well.
