The process of declaring a homosexual identity is often referred to as “coming out.” This is not always an easy process. Some adolescents may feel like they have to pretend to feel things because they do not to fit in with their social group, family, or community. They might also feel that they must deny who they are or hide an important part of themselves for fear of prejudice, discrimination, rejection, or violence. Because it may not be easy to find someone to talk to, confide in, or trust, adolescents may experience a number of emotional problems such as anxiety and depression. It is important to acquire knowledge about how best to assist adolescents facing this decision.
In your text, you read about David. Recall that David is the center fielder on the Jefferson High varsity baseball team. His father, David Sr., is the varsity soccer coach at the same school, and his mom is a nurse. He has a younger sister whom he describes as “perfect.” He sees the school social worker to get help with what is bothering him. He tells the social worker that he is gay, but no one knows because he “acts straight when around his teammates and others in school.” He would like to express how he really feels but does not know how it will be perceived by his family and peers.
In this Discussion, you consider a case study that portrays issues related to sexual orientation in adolescents.
To prepare: Review in full Case Study 6.1 on p. 190 of the course text.
Required Reading:
Hutchison, E. D. (2019). Dimensions of human behavior: The changing life course (6th ed.). Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications.
• Chapter 6, “Adolescence” (pp. 189-229)
Use APA 7th edition citation and references to answer the following:
• Identify potential biological, psychological, and social effects on David’s development as a result of his sexual orientation.
• Explain the development and ecological factors to be considered when serving David.
• Determine the most important message David needs to understand at this point in his life span.

Initial Post Instructions
For this Discussion, you will examine central tendency and variability in terms of pulse rate.
Find and record the pulse rate of 10 different people where you work. Tell us a little about the population from which you drew your data. Describe your findings in terms of central tendency and variability.
Consider using some of the following to help you form your initial discussion post:
What are your measures of central tendency (i.e., mean, median, and mode)? Which might be the better measure for central tendency and why?
What is the standard deviation of your data? How variable are the data (range)?
Are there any outliers? Investigate possible reasons for these outliers, and things that might limit them if further study were to be carried out.
What are some variables that should be considered in discussing your measures of central tendency and variation? Is there any skewness in your measured data?
How would you describe this data (i.e. what insights did you gain from this data)?
