Your task will be to create your own blog post using Blackboard’s preset blog format. You can find this on the left hand side of your BB main class page. Select your individual social iatrogenesis blog to start creating it. Your blog post will be private.
Goals of this assignment:
Learn about Ivan Illich’s concept of social iatrogenesis
Learn how to create an online informational/educational blog post for public consumption
Requirements and Assessment (Total of 50 points):
Introduction and definition of social iatrogenesis (10 points). Use the reading from Illich in course resources, the library, or any online resources to complete this section.
Short personal and intellectual biography of Ivan Illich (8 points). The library or online resources should be used to complete this section.
Contemporary example of social iatrogenesis reported in your own words (16 points). This is the most difficult part of the blog. Try to provide a contemporary case of social iatrogenesis and provide a reason why this is a pressing problem.
Hyperlinks and citations (6 points). Minimum of five hyperlinks and three citations.
Add pictures/multimedia (4 points). Minimum of two pictures/links/charts/tables. No videos please!
Bibliography/works cited section. (3 points)
Presentation/professionalism. (3 points)
The format I would suggest utilizing for this assignment is a Wikipedia page. (The difference between a wiki and a blog is that wiki’s are open to editing from the public, while blogs are personal). Of course I am not asking you to create an entire wiki page, but it might provide some ideas in terms of how you organize your information. While you may use Blackboard’s blog creation tool, it is a bit clunky to use, so you may just want to use Microsoft Word to create your blog post.

Step 1: CHOOSE YOUR TOPIC
As you prepare to become a professional social worker, consider a topic in which you have a
personal and/or professional interest and/or would like to engage in further exploration, but have
not yet explored in depth.
Step 2: SCHOLARLY REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE
This section of the thesis requires you to critically examine existing research related to your
topic. Review the literature to report relevant knowledge about practice, theory, policy, diversity,
& values and ethics that are critical to understanding the topic from a social work perspective.
The literature review section requires more than summarizing the views of researchers and what
has been reported on the topic. You must synthesize and evaluate the available research, and
identify possible gaps in the literature. It is important to demonstrate that you have an awareness
of the different opinions, theories, and approaches that others have written about related to your
topic. Some questions to consider include: How does the article/work contribute to an
understanding of the topic? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the studies? Does the
research offer extensive knowledge in the areas relevant to social work practice?

Empowerment theory is appropriate to use when a social worker engages with a mar

Empowerment theory is appropriate to use when a social worker engages with a marginalized population. A population may feel marginalized because of a perceived lack of control over their lives. They may feel that they have a limited voice or sense of power because they are seen negatively by society merely because of their membership in a particular social group (e.g., gay, lesbian, poor, racial minority, or differently abled).
One way that social workers share research—on marginalized populations and others—is through organizational conferences and meetings. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) sponsors the Annual Program Meeting (APM), where social work educators from all over the United States convene every year. The APM offers several types of sessions, and one of them is a poster presentation. During this session, viewers walk through the exhibit hall and interact with the presenters who are standing by their posters.
For this Assignment, imagine that your poster has been accepted and that you will be presenting it in the exhibit hall. Your poster presentation is based on your potential doctoral capstone topic and on a marginalized population. Because of the population, you are using empowerment theory to frame your topic.
To prepare:
**Review this article from the Learning Resources: Erren, T. C., & Bourne, P. E. (2007). Ten simple rules for a good poster presentation. PLoS Computational Biology, 3(5), e102. doi:10.1371/journal.pcbi.0030102
**For samples or templates of poster presentations, browse the website noted in the Learning Resources.
**Locate an empirical research article in the library about your topic or problem and a marginalized population
Your poster presentation should include the following:
**In bullet points, summarize the basic assumptions of empowerment theory.
**Identify the key concepts or terms associated with empowerment theory.
**Based on the article you located, summarize in three bullet points the major issues associated with the topic and population.
**In bullet points, describe how empowerment theory explains the cause of the problem in the targeted population (for example, child abuse among poor racial minority groups).
**Explain how change occurs to rectify the problem from the perspective of empowerment theory for this targeted population.
**Describe two interventions (from a day-to-day social work practice perspective or a policy perspective) that address this problem and that align with empowerment theory. Provide evidence from peer-reviewed journals or other scholarly resources to support the use of the recommended interventions with this population and problem.
**Evaluate one strength and one limitation in using empowerment theory to analyze the problem for this targeted population.
Topic: Reducing Recidivism of people on parole and probation.
For your poster presentation, be sure to:
Adhere to APA guidelines.
Use evidence to support your claims.
Include a reference list.

Think of the exercises in the Doctoral Strategies Toolkit as a cross between a workbook and a journal. The prompts evaluate your understanding of common doctoral-level skills and requirements, expanding your perspective for a deepening level of research. With the twin goal of reflection and improvement, you are encouraged to consider the prompts as a map, logging where you’ve been and where you still need to explore.
In this course, you have read research articles that discussed research methods. In future terms, you too will choose a research methodology to collect data for your future PhD dissertation or DSW capstone study. These are based on quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods research designs. A research design is the overall blueprint of the study, and it will guide how the research questions, sample recruitment, data collection procedures, and data analysis are conducted.
This week, you examine how other PhD Social Work and DSW alumni have collected data by reading their methodology plans.
To Prepare
Review the Explore Methodologies website found in the Learning Resources.
For DSW students, look at the Methodology section in the DSW capstone study (Section 2) you found earlier in the course
Tips
Don’t worry about all the details yet. You will be taking research methods courses for a comprehensive examination of research designs. Now, the goal is to think about the ideas you have for your topic and research problem in the context of how you might gather data. Reflect on the choices made by other researchers and look for the connections between what they wanted to answer and how they sought the answer.
Post
**In 3–4 sentences, describe your initial impressions about collecting data for your DSW capstone or PhD Social Work dissertation. For example, consider these questions:
*How do you think data collection may relate to the research topic you have in mind?
*Had you previously considered the relevance of data collection to your topic?
**In 2 sentences, identify a concern you may have about data collection for your future DSW capstone project or PhD Social Work dissertation.
**Describe three lessons you larned about research methodology and explain how you can apply them in conceptualizing your DSW capstone project.
