In your weekly course journal, you will reflect on prompts and consider what it may look like to reflect a Christian worldview within Mark. Keep in mind that this is an opportunity to reflect on your growth and understanding and perhaps consider course concepts a bit differently than you have before.
In 1–2 double-spaced pages, consider Mark’s Gospel from a biblical perspective. Choose 2 “threads” of integrating a Christian worldview to write about from the list of options below. Clearly identify which 2 threads you have chosen. Be sure to explain what your chosen threads might look like in theory and practice. Try to use all threads by the end of the course.
Biblical Integration “Threads” (choose 2):
God-Worshiping: The Christian worldview understands that worshiping God is about celebrating who God is, what God has done and is doing, and what God has created. Christians see worship as a way of life.
Idolatry-Discerning: The Christian worldview understands that when other “things” are more important to us than our relationship with God, they become idols. Christians are challenged to identify, understand, and discern the idols of our time and to then respond prophetically.
Earth-Keeping: Christians respond to God’s call to be stewards of all of creation.
Beauty-Creating: The Christian worldview celebrates God as the #1 Creator and understands that when we create things we show that we are made in God’s image. We offer praise to God by creating beautiful things. Our creativity makes God smile!
Justice-Seeking: Christians act as agents of change by identifying and responding to injustices.
Creation-Enjoying: The Christian worldview celebrates God’s beautiful creation.
Servant-Working: The Christian worldview works actively to heal brokenness and bring joy.
Community-Building: Christians should be active pursuers and builders of communal shalom.
Image-Reflecting: Christians bear the image of God in their daily lives. All humans are image reflectors.
Order-Discovering: Christians find harmony and order in God’s creation.

This assignment is an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding and application of one method/approach in interpreting a Gospel scene within the book of Mark. You will also be reviewing previous course concepts. This is an opportunity for you to present your knowledge of how to read particular Gospel scenes to the class based on what we have been learning.
Gospel narrative (choose 1 of the following)
Rich young ruler (Mark 10:17–31)
Jesus cleansing a leper (Mark 1:40–45)
Jesus’ death (Mark 15:22–39)
Picking grain on the Sabbath (Mark 2:23–28)
Jesus in a secluded place (Mark 1:35–39)
Jesus and his family (Mark 3:31–35)
Jesus at Nazareth (Mark 6:1–6)
Clean and unclean (Mark 7:1–8)
Jesus and blind man (Mark 8:22–26)
You will use 1 of these approaches in order to interpret the passage you chose:
Creedal reading
Canonical reading
Literary criticism
In your initial post:
State the Gospel scene as well as the approach you have chosen (creedal, canonical, literary).
Explain in 1–3 sentences what that approach is, essentially (define or explain what is either a creedal, canonical, or literary approach).
Explain how the approach you have chosen influences your reading and response to your selected Gospel scene. Start this portion in this manner: “My reading of the ________ narrative [state Scripture] is influenced by ________  [state the approach chosen]. This approach impacts my reading in the following two ways: … [provide 2 specific ways that your chosen approach influences your reading/response to the select Gospel scene].”
Next, choose 1 article from the previous activity in the Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels and demonstrate how a significant concept in that article helps you understand the same Gospel scene you have chosen.
State the article you have chosen from the Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels.
In 1 sentence, summarize the significant concept in that article.
Explain how that concept helps you to better understand the Gospel scene you chose above.

Address the various methods and procedures one might employ to change a subject’s behavior
such that it would, after training, perform a new behavior in a certain situation but not in
others. Name the method(s) and give alternate names that may exist. Explain how the
method(s) could do any of the following: cause the animal to display new behaviors, increase
the frequency of appropriate behaviors, decrease the frequency of inappropriate behaviors, or
discriminate when and where to emit those behaviors. Be sure to mention the ways these
methods could be misapplied, what undesirable effects those methods could cause, and how to
enact those methods so that those undesirable effects do not result.
The target audience for the paper is anyone who is in college with a working knowledge of
general psychology but has not yet taken a learning course, up to and including expert
researchers or practitioners in the learning field. Therefore, one must use proper nomenclature
and sources that the expert will recognize and appreciate, as well as explaining the terms,
methods, and concepts in simple enough language for the educated novice to understand.
Use the professional paper format of the American Psychological Association’s Publication
Manual (7th edition) with any modifications announced by Dr. Phinney.
The body of the paper should be at least ten pages (twelve-point font and 1-inch margins). The
body page count does not include the title page, abstract page, the reference section page(s),
or any other pages used to display figures, tables, or other material reasonable to include in an
APA format paper. Thus, the minimum page length for the entire paper is 13. There should be
at least 5 academic sources. For the purposes of this assignment, academic sources are peer
reviewed journal articles in the appropriate topic areas, peer-edited books in the proper
disciplines, and standard-label collegiate level textbooks in the proper disciplines. Web pages,
personal communications, online or broadcast video, and other sources may be used, but do
not count in the 5 academic source minimum. Citations should be used to support any
assertions of method names, procedures, desired effects, negative effects, remediations, and
so forth. Avoid direct quotations.
