For this analysis essay, you’re being asked to compare two articles on a similar subject in order to study and consider how their different audiences and forms (journalistic and academic) shape the argument, reasoning, and evidence that the writers include. There isn’t one right answer here, and you’ll be graded primarily on meeting the requirements.
Prompt and Instructions:
For this analytical essay, please analyze the two texts (Wolstenholme and Sweet) in the “What Happens When Others Deny Our Reality” page by comparing how each writer shapes their argument, reasoning, and evidence to appeal to their audience.
Prompt: What are Wolstenholme and Sweet arguing and how does each writer support their argument differently based upon the type of article they are writing?
Note that Wolstenholme is writing a journalistic article and Sweet is writing a peer-reviewed article. Work through the reading guide in the content page to help you take notes and structure your ideas.
The topic for both texts is gaslighting. The argument is what the writer is saying about gaslighting. The reasoning answers the question “Why does the writer argue that their point is necessary and convincing?” The evidence can include examples, other texts and arguments, data, interviews, etc.
Your analytical essay needs to be a minimum of 2 full, properly-formatted pages and it needs to focus on Wolstenholme and Sweet rather than on your reaction. You may briefly include your opinion about whether and where each argument is effective given the audience, but avoid focusing on whether you overall agree or disagree. In an analysis essay, your agreement or disagreement matters less, your goal is to demonstrate your understanding.
Include 1-2 short quotes from each article. Make sure each quotation is introduced (Links to an external site.). Provide context by reminding your reader what is happening in the original text when the quote occurs. Analyze each quote by explaining how it demonstrates the point you are making.
For citation: you do not need a works cited page because our course content page includes the full mla-style citation for each text, and we are not using additional outside sources. Make sure it is clear which author you are quoting by either including their name in your introduction to the quote or by including an in-text citation at the end of the sentence before the period (Wolstenholme). For Sweet, you will need to include a page number in an in-text citation when quoting. For example: Introduction, “quote” (Sweet 853).

Over the past two weeks, our readings and discussions have been focused on establishing a baseline for understanding wellness. In this module, we’ll begin our tour through the four lenses, beginning with history. As we dive into the four lenses, keep in mind that each lens is framed as a way of seeing the issue and is not necessarily tied to the associated discipline. So, looking through the historical lens isn’t just about History Channel documentaries—it’s also about how you use the lens to understand the past and present. As you write your initial post, answer the following questions:
In what ways does looking through the history lens enhance your understanding of wellness?
Consider a current event in the news that has a historical counterpart. How does looking through the history lens influence how you perceive both the current and historical events? Please share a news link to your events.
How does analyzing the relationship between history, culture, and wellness have an influence on your discipline of study or chosen profession?

THESE ARE 3 SEPARATE DISCUSSIONS. PLEASE, ANSWERS EACH DISCUSSION IN SEPARATE PAGES AND LABLES EACH DISCUSSION SEPARATELY.
DISCUSSION #1
Here is your first graded discussion question, related to Chapter 1 (your initial comment is due by midnight on Friday and is worth up to 10 points; your second comment is due by midnight on Sunday for up to an additional 5 points):
1. First, what was experimentally wrong with the ESP study and how could it be improved to meet scientific standards?
2. Second, if you were doing this study, what would be your hypothesis, and what would your independent and dependent variables be (make sure to list and label them as IVs and DVs)?
3. Third, how would you make it an experimental (rather than correlational) study (it might help to define these two types of studies in your response)?
4. Finally, what are some of the ethical problems with this study?
Note that this question asks for FOUR things from you. Missing an item will lower your score on your initial comment, so make sure to respond thoroughly to all four parts of the question. After answering the question in your initial comment, I want you to discuss this research with your group as you engage in a group discussion (your follow-up comment). You can agree or disagree with other group members, noting why you feel this way in your follow-up response. Or you could suggest other ways of conducting research by using other’s comments as a jumping-off point. Finally, note that the time-table for posting your second comment is “somewhat” flexible. You have to post it both comments by midnight on Sunday at the very latest, but you can actually post both before Sunday if you like (this just requires that another group member has posted their first comment early in the week as well so you can respond on your second comment).

DISCUSSION #2
Consider the following vignette and discuss with your group.
A research team is interested in studying the effects of television exposure on the development of social skills. What research method and design would you use for this study, and why? What are the ethical considerations for this type of research?
