Changing Behaviors

For your writing assignment this week, describe three potential behaviors that you would like to change, by either increasing or decreasing the behavior. You may choose a behavior of your own to change (such as I need to study more every week) or you may choose to modify a behavior of one of your children (I want my son to spend less time playing video games each week).  You may choose a child as you are in charge of rearing that child and spend a major portion of each day with the child.  You may not choose to modify a behavior of an adult other than yourself so that we do not break any ethical guidelines.  In your writing, discuss why you feel the behavior is a problem that needs to be changed.  At the end of your assignment, rank the behaviors in order of the one you most want changed to least changed.  Your professor will discuss if the chosen behavior will work for this assignment or if you need to choose one of your other options.

1. I need to stop procrastinating.
2. I wont my son to do better about going to the potty.
3. I would like to change the fact that I react out of anger instead of being humble.

Based on the excerpt of Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle in the Virtual Reader, as well as your textbook and lecture notes, answer these three questions in three separate paragraphs:

Part 1: List and explain one way that the meatpacking industry in Chicago abused its workers.  As part of your response, provide at least one direct, multi-sentence quote from The Jungle, the lecture notes, or the textbook to support your answer. Provide the page (or at least the chapter) citation for your blockquote.

Part 2:  List and explain one way that the meatpacking industry in Chicago defiled the meat they were in charge of.  As part of your response, provide at least one direct, multi-sentence quote from The Jungle, the lecture notes, or the textbook to support your answer.  Provide the page (or at least the chapter) citation for your blockquote.

Part 3:  What protections do we have in place today to keep similar abuses from occurring to our workers or the products they produce?  (You may use outside resources to obtain this information).

Do not even use material for your essay for parts 1 and 2 that does not come from the resources provided in this course (lecture notes, PowerPoints, textbook, monograph, Virtual Reader) This will get you a grade of 0 for the entire Midterm Exam. Correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation are expected.

Narrative Essay: Recounting a meaningful moment

Tell a short, powerful, true story.
Remember: This is not an invitation to give us your opinion on a topic youre passionate about. Instead, your challenge is to tell a meaningful and interesting story something with a beginning, middle and end. Because youre telling a story rather than, say, simply reflecting on your feelings about a topic, there should be a conflict of some kind an obstacle, problem or tension that is resolved in some way.
Keep in mind, however, that any story can work. It doesnt have to be the most dramatic, life-altering thing that ever happened to you; it can, instead, be about baking brownies with your brother, or a conversation you had on Tuesdays bus ride to school. Its all in how you tell it.
Though the word narrative might make you think fiction, this story should be true. Tell us about a meaningful event from your real life.
You’ll need to communicate not only what happened, but why it mattered to you. What is meaningful about this story? Why are you telling it?
Write it in your own real voice, with vivid descriptive language.
This is an invitation to open up and write in a way that feels natural. We want your personality to come across.
We also want your writing to be vivid and engaging, so that readers can imagine the scenes you describe, and feel what the narrator is feeling. We hope youll edit until youre happy with every word.
Please also remember, however, to keep your audience in mind.
Write something original.
Do not chose a story or essay you have written about in the past. Think through your life and start fresh, with a new perspective. Use the skills you have learned this semester to gather and develop your ideas.
