Company Accounting PG Assignment s2 2016
The following questions require you to deal with AASB 15 Revenue from Contracts with Customers, and other relevant documents. You can assume that your company adopted this rule. Reponses based on irrelevant accounting standards, such as AASB 118, or material taught in previous units will incur a 100% penalty.
Each group will nominate a member to submit a single word file with the groups response to the questions. (I do not want separate files for each question.)
Submission date and details as per the unit outline.
Question 1 (40 marks)
You work for a start-up consulting company in a very competitive area. Your firm provides expertise to entities who wish to reduce their carbon footprint. The firm will typically send a team to a clients workplace to understand their business processes and identify where improvements can be made. After this, the firm produces a detailed report for the client. In order to build business, the firm gets clients to pay 20 percent of the contract price up front and the remaining 80 percent will be paid on receipt of the report. If the client defaults, the firm can keep the 20 percent received. The firm has decided it will not pursue these claims in court, as the legal costs are likely to exceed the benefits.
The managing director of the firm is not wildly delighted with these terms, but has approved them, due to the cutthroat nature of this industry. He expects to manage this risk by selecting clients (such as government agencies, and other entities who can use this sort of report in their marketing) who are unlikely to play nasty games, such as paying their bills.
Assume that your firms financial year ends on the 30th of June 2019. On the 1st of April 2019, the firm received $200,000 from a client for a report that is expected to be delivered to the client at the end of July 2019. The total contracted price is $1,000,000. Internal budgeting shows that your company expects to pay $550,000 to internal staff and $150,000 to external experts to produce the report. These costs are expected to be incurred evenly over the period.
An argument has broken out in the accounting team how these contracts should be accounted for. Kelly states that the company should recognise the $200,000 immediately and the remaining amount when the report is presented. On the other hand, Lee states that the company should recognise all of the $200,000 and some of the $800,000 in the current year, as the companys profits are not expected to be very strong this year. To further complicate things, Ngoc stated that no income at all should be recognised until the report is completed and given to the client.
Required
Your manager bumped into you at the end of financial year party. He wants you to clarify this. That is, work out how much income should be reported this year and next year. Just after his 4th glass of red wine and before he fell out of his chair, he mumbled something about working out how many performance obligations there are in this contract. He is expected out of hospital in a couple of weeks.
Research AASB 15 and associated relevant documents to determine when your company should recognise the income from the client described above. You need to specify the treatment of the $200,000 and the $800,000. You must identify and state any assumptions you make. These assumptions must be based on authoritative sources, and you must present specific references. (In this case para XXX of YYY is fine.)
Please place your answers here. Add extra lines as necessary.
Marking guide Question 1 Possible marks Marks achieved
Number of performance obligations 5
When is/are the performance obligation(s) satisfied? 10
How to account for the $200,000 15
How to account for the $800,000 10
Total 40
Question 2 (60 marks)
You work for a company that buys products from suppliers and then sells them on TV, via direct marketing channels. The company has a policy of allowing customers to have a full refund if they return products within 30 days of purchase. This refund only applies if the goods are undamaged and can be resold to other customers. The proportion of units that are refunded varies a lot, depending on the characteristics of each product. The best products have a refund rate of 3%. The worst products have a refund rate of around 30%. (That is, 30% of units of those products were returned by customers within the 30 day window).
The company uses the perpetual inventory system. You can assume that all sales are made via credit cards and these are classified as credit sales.
The manager of the company is a good friend of the CFO. You have been told that the managers quarterly bonus requires him to show an increase in profits in each quarter. The gossip around the office is that sales have been too low this quarter (ending on March 31) and the managers target is unlikely to be met.
On the 28th of March 2019 your company started selling a new, revolutionary range of wigs, made from the hides of a special breed of long haired rat. (Dont worry, the rat is not an endangered species.) The wig is revolutionary, due to its raw materials and because it is stapled onto the head of the customer, preventing it from flying away in strong winds. This is considered a great advantage by the manufacturer. However, there is a concern that these wigs may attract cats. Oddly enough, your company does not have experience dealing with this product, so it is unsure of the percentage of wigs that will be returned in less than 30 days. Each wig costs $40 and is sold for $120. You can ignore mailing costs. On the 28th of March 2019, the company sold 50 of these wigs.
The CFO told you he is concerned there is a lot of uncertainty relating to the number of new wigs that will be returned. He suggests it would be better if no revenue was recorded for March. He went on to say that this should be recorded in April, once a clearer picture had emerged of the proportion of wigs returned. The marketing people seem to believe that sales of the new product will grow very quickly, and will stabilise at about 700 per day within a couple of months.
The company has also been selling wigs made from synthetic materials for a number of years. These cost the company $10 each and sell for $85 each. Over this time the company has noticed that on average, 5 percent of these wigs are returned within 30 days of sale. On the 28th of June, the company sold 900 of these wigs.
Required
Part A Answer each sub-part.
1) Prepare journal entries that the CFO wants in relation to the sales of the new wigs made on the 28th of March 2019. (5 marks)
2) Prepare the journal entries to show how the company should account for the sales of the synthetic wigs, according to AASB 15. (10 marks)
3) Prepare the journal entries to show how the company should account for the sales of the new wigs, according to AASB 15. If you think the CFOs suggestion is correct, simply say As per the CFOs suggestion. Justify your position with reference to the standard, associated documentation, and the current Exposure Draft of the Conceptual Framework. (Hint, have a look at the material relating to qualitative characteristics.) (20 marks)
Part B
Assume that on April 27 (30 days after the date of sale), 7 of the new wigs were returned and refunds were paid. In addition, 43 of the old wigs were returned. All returned wigs were undamaged and were returned to inventory. Prepare relevant journal entries. (15 marks)
Part C
Discuss whether the CFOs proposal would assist or hinder the manager to obtain a bonus. (10 marks)

Hi Folks,
I have received a couple of requests to clarify the word count for the assignment questions. I tend to avoid setting these for technical questions, but here are my suggestions. Please note, the material below is guidance only. It is not mandatory. The critical issue is that you submit an answer to each question which addresses that question and is correct, according to the relevant rule(s). If there is reasonable room for multiple interpretations of the facts or the rules, I have no problem if you wish to explore that, as long as the discussion is focused and relevant.
I will penalise ‘spam’ responses. You need to be critical of your work, to ensure you submit a good response. Remember, you are trying to explain something to the reader. You can assume the reader is a trained accountant. Please do not copy and paste large amounts of the rules which are not directly relevant to the questions.
Q1 I suggest this could be easily answered in less than 1,000 words.
Q2 I suggest this could be easily answered in 1,000 words.

Write a 900 word essay, drawaing upon literary genres and the readings in Unit 3.
Unit 3 Introduction –
Literature of the Later Early Modern Period
In this unit we will be exploring the later Early Modern Period. This is the time frame following the Renaissance in Europe through the 18th century. Even though this is a time frame marked by circumstances in Europe, it is also a period when certain changes were happening in the world of literature. Generally, the literature of this period reflects the continued Renaissance trait of exploring the world, particularly the world of nature. However, it also shifts from looking outward with a sense of expansion, to an inward looking more reflective, analytical assessment of the past and of the individual.
We will be focusing our look at the Early Modern period with readings from Spanish, French, English, Chinese, and Japanese. We will look at literature in three different genres: fiction, drama, and poetry. Another element of this unit will be to look at the socio-political contexts and intellectual foundations that influenced and defined the Early Modern Period. We will also look at the sonnet as a particular form and structure of poetry.
Early Modern Period
The Early Modern Period stretches from the Middle Ages until the late 18th century. We will be covering only the later part of this period with a focus on the period of time that reflects a transition from the Renaissance up to the Enlightenment. Transition is a key to the later Early Modern Period. It was a time of change – sometimes rapid and significant changes. It had upheavals in religion, politics, international relations, and society. Trade grew; industries and merchandising opportunities grew; cities grew; scientific knowledge and technology grew, and empires grew. Much of what we can point to in our world as being “modern” had its earliest versions arise in this period.
One major aspect of this period was a general sense of expansion – a literal and metaphysical looking outward from the self. The Renaissance had opened up an age of exploration of ideas as well as of geography. In the later Early Modern Period, people were taking advantage of the discoveries of the Renaissance and expanding their understanding of the world of nature, the geography of different places, and the examination of new ideas about society and cultures. This was a period that saw the rise of contact (through trade and conquest) between previously isolated parts of the globe. The still relatively new middle class had a huge impact on world economies and institutions, and they became more sophisticated and globally articulated. It also saw the European colonization of the Americas, Asia, and Africa during the 15th to 19th centuries, which spread Christianity around the world. The early modern trends in various regions of the world represented a shift away from medieval modes of organization, politically and other-times economically. This period in Europe saw new forms of government take shape; the power of monarchies grew as regional differences melted away with the loss of isolation. Seafaring countries found riches and fought over the results leading to piracy and small wars. The interest in nature and natural phenomena, along with the new ideas arising out of the new concepts of “scientific enquiry” led to new ideas in science as well as in applied science. This is the age in which the foundations of the industrial age were laid. Travel improvements associated with development of trade made the world easier to connect to and new experiences and products abounded. During the Renaissance, the Church had lost its tight hold on most governments and this continued into the later Early Modern Period.
One element of this unit is a look at the cultures of the Orient, specifically China and Japan. While these may seem like completely foreign cultures at first glance, we will focus on the elements of commonality. Basically, though their governments were different and their world views were different. The people of China and Japan shared, and still do, many common human outlooks as they transitioned from a medieval culture into the Early Modern Period in their own parts of the world.
Don Quixote: Miguel de Cervantes published the first part of Don Quixote in 1605. It was such a success that his characters became well-known throughout Spain. As a result, when a sequel to his book was published by someone else, he wanted to be sure that the characters remained true to his vision, so he wrote his own “authorized” sequel (part 2), which was published in 1615. Often considered the first novel, Don Quixote, is a literary work that uses fiction to call into question many of the accepted truths in his own society.
Cervantes’ life was full of adventure: He was a student, a soldier, a captive, and a tax-collector for the king. He was able to see royalty close at hand, but he was relatively poor, and so he had a different perspective than most of the nobility in Early Modern Spain.
At the time, Spain had a lot of influence in the world. During the Renaissance, Spain had established trade routes and territorial possessions throughout the New World, Africa, and Asia, as well as Europe. However, near the end of the 16th century, Spain’s greatness was waning. The defeat of eth Spanish Armada in 1588 by the English, and a monarchy that was nearly bankrupt by war had resulted in an upheaval in social conditions. There was also a growing challenge to Spain’s orthodox Catholicism as a backlash to the Church’s Counter-Reformation.
The assigned readings in Don Quixote reveal Cervantes’ intention to parody (an imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect) the romantic books of chivalry. They also reflect the questioning that Cervantes does about the changing situations in Spain: the increasing levels of poverty in Spain, including the nobility; fighting wars that seemed to have no purpose directly for Spain; anxiety about political and religious struggles and persecution.
Now, read the following selections from Don Quixote:
Part I (Chapters 1 – 8) – https://www.gutenberg.org/files/35993/35993-h/35993-h.htm#CHAPTER_I
Part 2 (Chapters 64 – 65) – https://www.gutenberg.org/files/35993/35993-h/35993-h.htm#CHAPTER_LXIV
Part 2 (Chapters 73 – 74) – https://www.gutenberg.org/files/35993/35993-h/35993-h.htm#CHAPTER_LXXIII
As you read, look for the way that Cervantes places the ideas of reason against the moral conviction of Quixote. On one side of Quixote’s quests lies the world of chivalric right versus wrong, but on the other side is the constantly intruding world of reason and reality

The Story of the Stone / The Dream of the Red Chamber: Relatively little is known about Cao Xueqin’s life. His family served in low-level government positions under the Qing emperors, but in his early teens, Xueqin’s family fortunes shifted. Their land and property was seized and they had to fend for themselves among the poorest levels of the common people.
Xueqin’s The Story of the Stone (or The Dream of the Red Chamber) was likely started sometime between 1740 and 1750. It was unfinished when Cao died, but it was later taken up again and revised and expanded by a writer by the name of Gao E, finally published in 1791. It has become known as one of the four greatest Chinese novels of all time. It still has a popular following today. This story is believed to be semi-autobiographical, as it uses the rise and decay of a family that suffered similar circumstances to Cao Xueqin’s own family.
In the first chapter, we see that it is intended to be a memorial to the women of the narrator’s youth: friends, relatives and servants. Like most Chinese novels, this one is quite long, longer than most in fact. It also has a huge cast of characters, and displays a wide range of psychological and emotional experiences. It is often noted particularly for its precise and detailed observation of the life and social structures typical of 18th-century Chinese aristocracy.
This is a story set in a world of metaphysical beings and humans, and it examines the story of an extended family, mostly from the perspective of the women. All the while, it explores questions about the nature of love and lust, the differences between female and male understanding of the world, the impact of power and money, and the differences between truth and illusion.
Now, read following selections from The Story of the Stone / The Dream of the Red Chamber” – https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/9603/pg9603.html.

Define Phase Project Charter Project Name Construction of Medical Hospital in the Ward Project Number DMS/SSH/2432/2017 Project Team State Medical Facilities Development Team Priority Level High Project Sponsor The State Government Start Date 12th August 5, 2016 Completion Date I5th December, 2017 Project Mission By decentralizing medical services from the state headquarters, we will be able to reach more constituents. Therefore, the main purpose of this project is to make health services affordable to all; young, old, rich, poor, abled and for those with special needs. We will also reduce congestion at the state medical hospital thereby efficiency and quick service delivery to the citizens. Establishing the hospital in this ward will also create employment either directly or via businesses formed by the virtue of catering to the people who will be working at the hospital and those seeking treatment. Problem Statement For the past two years, there have been long queues at the state medical hospital outpatient department, congestion in the wards since the hospital has been admitting 16% more patients than it is supposed. This congestion has increased doctor patient ratio to 1:67, which is adversely affecting the service delivery by lowering the standards. Goal Statement To reduce congestion in our state hospital by at least 25% to regain the required medical facilities standards in the country and serve more people at the ward level. Objectives Establishing the medical facility is aimed at achieving the following objectives • To have accessible and quality medical services within reach for all regardless of who • Reduce the congestion at the state hospice by at least 25% • To reach the old and person with disability who would otherwise not find the services • To create direct and indirect employment at the local level and spur economic growth • To ensure equitable distribution of resources in the state Project Champion, Process Owner and Team A viable project is enticing on paper, but if wrongly or poorly implemented, it becomes a futile exercise (Santra, 2015). Therefore, visionary and passionate professionals and leaders will run the project (Kumar & Sharma, 2012). The process owner (Andy Weinstein) is the sponsor is the state government who instigated the project, funded it, contracted it out and will benefit from the project’s output by decongesting the state hospice. The project (Albert Brauck) champion shall be the project manager who will also be the operations team leader. The champion will coordinate the team to deliver the desired output. The team that shall run the show in this project will be, the ward representative as the chairperson; the public works chief as the vice-chairman. The state health director shall be the secretary; the state engineer will be the project manager, the youth leader as the treasurer, the women league leader as the spokesperson and project secretary. Members of the team shall be the ward medical services in-charge, the chief ward Kadhi, and the chair of the Christian leaders. This group will constitute representatives of all members of the society (Tennakoon & Palawatta, n.d). Professionals’ views will be heard through public participation and memoranda presented to the implementing committee. Resources The resources at the project’s exposure include the funds allocated to the construction of the hospital, which will help sub-contacting, procurement and paying wages. There are high profile machine and equipment that will make work easier. Hoists, cranes, lifts, tractors and mixers are a few equipment at the exposure of the project implementers. Consultants are also resources for the project. Organizational Support The success of every project depends on the level of appreciation from the various quotas in the organization and the society that the facility shall serve (Kurma & Sharma). This project has seen tremendous support from the government since it is the project sponsor, provided the project champion, and all the resources for the completion of the project. The medical services department has accorded the maximum support to the progress of the development by providing their audit team and their boardroom where the team conduct meetings for progress and deliberations. Project Plan and Milestones This social investment was conceived in August 2015, and the project proposal was presented to the state cabinet in October 2015. The council was convinced beyond any reasonable doubt that the project was viable and required fast tracking for the sake of citizen and residents of Kansas and the neighboring communities (Santra, 2015). The milestones for this project are; see the attached gnatt chart; The assurance we have from the project manager and the project secretary is that there will be uncompromised quality (Kumar & Sharma, 2012). The construction began on 12th January 2016. The project manager engages all interest groups in gathering their views to ensure the contractor delivers the best. Though there are critiques, the project is ahead of schedule. By June 2016, the construction was expected to be at 35%, but the certified complete work is at 37.5%. Therefore, from the look of things, the construction which was scheduled to start running by December 2017, it could begin running in August 2017. The assurance we have from the project manager and the project secretary is that there will be uncompromised quality (Kumar & Sharma, 2012). The variation is favorable to the citizens and the government and is highly appreciated. Communication Plan A project revolving a public utility is a social investment which should be communicated to the society it affects, including the whole world. In this regard, it is a hospital and is meant to provide medical services to all residents of the area. Therefore, the community should get to know about the new hospital coming up, the amount of public resources involved and the services it is looking forward to offering (Tennakoon & Palawatta, n.d). The project secretary shall prepare the meetings’ minutes and disseminate to all committee members within 12 hours after the meeting. She will also be tasked to put the progress of the development on social media platforms like Project website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram after every three months. Professionals will be represented in all the meetings to ascertain the quality and the progress as they are the oversight agents of the development agenda. Every report will be gazette in the national daily and the government newspaper for all to access the information. Communication will be a way to tell the people the truth and the reality on the ground. References Kumar, A. & Sharma, N. (2012). A Case Study on Application of DMAIC to Improve Delivery Efficiency. SSRN Electronic Journal. http://dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.2706992 DMAIC Measure Phase (Paper 2) Measurement Phase Possible project Y’s Using both practical and efficient ways, we were able to identify possible values of project Ys. We will be able to reduce congestion in the state hospital by at least 25%. We will improve service delivery by reducing the time taken from when a patient walks into the premises to when s/he is either discharged or admitted to the hospital wards. Data Type Being a medical facility project study, the data collected can only be qualitative as the number of patients to be treated there cannot be fully ascertained. The data we have is the data gathered from the state hospital regarding the number of patients treated there and the area of residence. After determining the number of patients from this ward, we realized that about 14% of the patients that seek medical help from the state hospital are from this locality, both inpatient, and outpatient. We also realized that the number of the citizens who are sick and could not afford transport to the state hospital were more than those have sought medical help at the state hospital. However, this number will be ascertained soon after the start of the new hospice’s operations. The subsequent research data will be quantitative and will give the clear picture of the workload that the state hospital will have been relieved by the ward hospice. The data will be precise, and the scientific results rallied to the public in due course (McCarty, 2005). Our officers will be assisting in collecting the data which we will analyze after, and communicate to all. In the data at hand, we got to know that majority of the patients treated at the state hospital in our ward were children below the age of twelve years, and about 57% were girls with various infections and severe malaria. 43% were boys with injuries on the hands due to falling, bone fractures and a few with malaria. About 34% were women between the age of eighteen to thirty-two seeking antenatal care and reproductive health consultancy. The rest were elderly and infants seeking comprehensive treatments. It was ascertained that out of all patients, only 6% were mature men between the ages of eighteen to sixty-four years. However, a majority of those visitors and seeking admission for their patients were men of the ages mentioned above. Catering shows that men are more affected by ailments than being infected and therefore the responsibility of being there physically and availing finances for treatment is born by men (Santra, 2015). Data Collection Techniques The viability of our hospital project will be fully realized after the operations begin. This is the time we shall have the right and fair data set of our project (Kurma & Sharma, 2012). We shall ensure that our clients who are the patients and those bringing them to hospital give us direct customer feedback through a small form that they will be filling after the treatment with the help of the attending nurse. We will also be timing the time spent between the time a patient is taken in for consultation and the time he leaves (Tennakoon & Palawatta, n.d). Talk time is quite an important role. The number of patients we receive over a period will also be rated with a view of rating the level and quality of services the clients receive. We will be making random calls to or customers to know how they are faring after receiving treatment from us. Besides calling our outpatient clients, we will be ascertaining the accuracy of the diagnosis from our inpatients. Both the calls and visits to the ward will help us rate the quality of our diagnosis equipment and the keenness of our medical practitioners. Data Collection Strategy On probability sampling, we shall use cluster sampling when dealing with a diagnosis sample. A simple random shall be employed when testing the age, gender and reasons for the visit to the facility. Non-probability test shall be done while doing convenience check on talk time. The random calls and ward visits will also give the judgment sample. Measurement Technique Continuous data shall be subjected to juxtaposing the tolerant level against the set standards 8% by the state. The percentage of the contribution shall also be tested against the requirement of 2% (McCarty, 2005). We shall also establish the various categories that are distinct from the rest. Discrete data will be rigorously tested for the accuracy, how recurrent problems are, and how repetitive the tasks are and reproduced. Process Capability Short term establishment of numerous errors correct the long term problems (Santra, 2015). Therefore, the errors we shall establish during the near future shall be corrected to save the long term effects. The data we shall collect, and the measurement system we shall use to analyze the data shall be the tools to help establish the tolerance, error of contribution and by the results obtained, we shall act accordingly. We shall invest in technology and controls in the long run where the clusters are higher, thereby lowering the standards set in the health services delivery. References Kumar, A. & Sharma, N. (2012). Supervision

Supervision

Many novice human services providers or those who are new to the field are required to practice under supervision to gain the skills necessary to work autonomously with their clients. These professionals who require supervision do not possess the licensure or certification needed to practice independently. The supervision provides the novice professionals with an opportunity to develop the skills necessary to practice independently by working with experienced clinicians while meeting the standards required by their state or province to obtain licensure at the highest level, which would allow them to practice independently.
However, some human services professionals may never seek the highest level of licensure and practice indefinitely under the required supervision of their profession.
In this assignment, you will review your state’s requirements for supervision of counselors and social workers to understand and apply the rules in your future career as a human services administrator.
Tasks:
Read your state’s requirements identified in the relevant licensing board’s website for supervision of counselors and social workers. After you have read the requirements, address the following in about 300 words:

What are the differences between training supervision and general work supervision for counselors and social workers? Specifically, what is the purpose of each type of supervision and how is supervision conducted in each category?
What are the education and experience requirements for the supervisors of counselors and social workers?
What is your opinion on the importance of supervision?
What ethical dilemmas do supervisors face in their role?
