Adolescent Marginalization

1. Read the article explaining Kurt Lewins sociological conceptualization of the adolescent as a marginal man.
2. Then, briefly summarize what you read in the handout, be sure to capture the main ideas in your own words.
3. Next, provide an example of an adolescent whose behavior appears to overlap between childhood and adulthood, as in the article. In other words, the adolescent chose at one moment to behave like an adult and at another moment chose to act like a child. Use an example based on your own observations and experiences (don’t make up an example!). Clearly identify the child-like behavior(s) and the adult-like behavior(s).

Module 4 Task 1

Read the designated page numbers found in NEA’s An Educator’s Guide to the “Four Cs.” Preview the document. At the end of each description, there are specific examples of how the Cs are integrated into various subject matter and grade levels.
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, pp. 8-11
Communication, pp. 13-16
Collaboration, pp. 19-21
Creativity and Innovation, pp. 24-26

Describe a lesson you experienced that involved at least 2 of the Cs from the above list.  Identify and describe the Cs in the lesson. If you can’t think of a lesson that involved any of the Cs, describe a lesson you experienced recently and include how you would have integrated two of the Cs from the above list (no more than half a page; refer to the examples at the end of each description from the reading for ideas).

Sociological Research Proposal

Part 3: Data Section

In this Portfolio Project, you are creating a sociological research proposal, imagining a scenario where you are completing this proposal with students in a college-level Introduction to Sociology class.

You will be creating pieces or components for this final Portfolio Project throughout SOC101, in the Portfolio Milestones in Weeks 3, 4, 5, and 6. This week, Week 8,  you will construct new pieces for the final proposal as well as compile all the components into a final research proposal.

The pieces, then, of the research proposal are as follows: (Please organize your final research proposal submission in this order.)

A 1- to 2-page introduction. (Created in Portfolio Milestone, Module 6.)
A 1- to 2-page study description of the specifics of your study including a) the description of your participants (if any), b) the location of the study, c) the duration of the study, and d) the research approach you would use (qualitative or quantitative, or mixed methods). (Created in Module 8.)
A 1/2- to 1-page data section describing the data you expect to gather from your research. (Created in Module 8.)
An appendix containing the 2- to 3-page annotated bibliography (created in Module 4) and the 2- to 3-page literature review (created in module 5). (Appendix is created in Module 8.)
Note that in Week 8, you create the following pieces:

The specifics of your study (1-2 pages), including a description of your participants (if any), the location of the study, the duration of the study, and the research approach you would use (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods as discussed in the Module 1 interactive lecture).
The data you expect to gather from your research (1/2-1 page).

The McDonaldization of Society

In the later part of the 20th century, fast-food industries rose to prominence across the United States, including the McDonald’s hamburger chain. As part of fast-food production came the standardization of quality and processes. This, coupled with the repetition of tasks employees performed, delivered a uniformed taste and customer experience across all fast-food franchises. Customers expected every McDonalds to offer up the same recipe and environment.

This standardization began to infiltrate other organizations. That is, efficiency and impersonality were valued over technical competence in these highly structured and hierarchical franchises. This led sociologists to identify that America was succumbing to McDonaldization as a way of life.

For this assignment, you are asked to research the term McDonaldization using a search engine like Google. Choose a minimum of four sources. Feel free to use a variety of sources including social media, scholarly writings, online shopping, food delivery services, and other facets of a culture where McDonaldization is evident. The idea here is to see how McDonaldization is understood in the world.
Based on your findings from these various sources, summarize the outcomes of McDonaldization on society. How has bureaucracy served to work in some ways, but not in others?
