The tectonic plates

Describe the forces that cause the tectonic plates to move. Describe the different kinds of plate tectonic boundaries and what happens at each type of plate boundary. The expanding Earth hypothesis was first formulated in the 1950s by S. Warren Carey, an Australian geologist. Though Professor Carey recognized sea floor spreading and the idea that the continents had once been assembled into the supercontinent of Pangaea, he did not recognize an important element of the modern day plate tectonic paradigm. What was that element and how does it weaken the expanding Earth hypothesis? Think about the entire Plate Tectonics process.

Health Care Relationships and Liability

“Before an individual can bring a lawsuit to establish some form of liability against a health care provider, the individual must have established a relationship with that provider. Without this relationship, the parties to a lawsuit are basically strangers who have no obligation to each other that could serve as the basis for a malpractice lawsuit” (McWay, 2010, p.68).

Using Fig. 4.1 from your course text, define and describe the health care relationships most common to legal action in the field of health care. Your analysis of these relationships should include:

  1. Physician-Patient Relationships
    a. How can this relationship be terminated?2. Hospital-Patient Relationships
    a. What impact, if any, does the EMTALA have on this relationship?3. Hospital-Physician Relationships
    a. What is the role of medical staff privileges in this relationship?4. Enrichment Activity
    a. Construct a series of flowcharts (a minimum of three). Each flowchart should illustrate a health care relationship, a type of lawsuit, and a defense that could be raised. (“SmartArt” is a function of the most recent Microsoft Word versions that could be used to create flowcharts. It is located under the “Insert” tab on the tool ribbon at the top of the page, within Word)

b. Compare the differences between the flowcharts, and determine whether any of the elements in your flowcharts can be interchanged with another element. Can health care reform improve the dynamics of these relationships? If so, how?

Breast

Case Study
CM is a 43-year-old female who presents with concerns regarding two painless right-breast lumps that she detected four months ago. She missed an appointment for evaluation by her primary-care provider at that time and presents today with reportedly no change in these findings since that time. There has been no breast discharge, bleeding, overlying skin changes, lymphadenopathy, or fevers; she denies recent or past breast trauma. She did, however, undergo a stereostatic breast biopsy three years ago that demonstrated atypical lobular hyperplasia, and there is a known family history of breast cancer (mother, diagnosis at age 48). Current review is significant for a 10-pound weight loss due to diminished appetite over the last two months. Amenorrheic x three years; no current hormonal-replacement therapy or previous oral-contraceptive use; had levonorgestrel implantation at age 28, removed at age 33 and has only used condoms since, but nothing now as she is not sexually active.
This case is meant to highlight indications for breast-cancer screening and to outline the standard evaluation of a female who presents with a breast mass.
After completing your Case Study and reviewing the guidelines for breast-cancer screening, answer the following questions using the latest evidenced based guidelines:
Discuss the questions that would be important to include when interviewing a patient with this issue, including any risk factors she may have.
1. Describe the clinical findings that may be present in a patient with this issue.
2. Are there any diagnostic studies that should be ordered on this patient? Why?
3. List the primary diagnosis and three differential diagnoses for this patient. Explain your reasoning for each.
4. Discuss your management plan for this patient, including pharmacologic therapies, tests, patient education, referrals, and follow-ups.
