Discussion: Policy AgendasThere are challenges to agenda building that if not dealt with carefully and skillfully can adversely affect an issue or a proposal that you are trying to place in front of a decision maker. On the other hand, no matter how expertly you build an agenda for your issue or proposal, some issues are going to simply be avoided or not selected for consideration. Why is this so?In this Discussion, you explore challenges surrounding policy agendas and the reasons why some proposals never make it to the decision maker.Post your responses to the following questions:Many social issues do not receive the necessary attention from decision makers. Why might these issues be cast aside?
Some issues lack sufficient support to ensure that they are added to decision-makers’ agendas. Why might this be?
Some issues receive significant attention from decision makers. Why might these issues easily find their way onto decision makers’ agendas?

Why might these issues be cast aside? Many social issues do not receive the necessary attention from decision makers as it doesn’t receive enough support from the public. In order for decision makers to act on advocate preferences, advocates must communicate their policy preferences to decision makers (Edwards&Hoefer, 2010). Many times this occurs is due to the lack of support that an advocate receives from the public. Also if funding isn’t available this will also be difficult to get attention from decision makers as it will be hard to get the social issue media attention. Advocating for social issues is also a long process. Once a social issue is discovered, you must also find someone to introduce your issue to the house which requires having political power. Sometimes not having the right connections can lead to lack off attention from decision makers such as not being part of an organization. Social work advocacy organizations can address this knowledge gap by providing instructions for locating one’s elected representative, sharing contact information for elected officials, presenting guidance for how to contact elected officials, and supplying templates to help format effective communications (Edwards&Hoefer, 2010). Another issue is due to the fact that legislators usually don’t give attention to social issues that aren’t a political gain to their party. Before an issue can advance into the later phases of policy practice, where proposals are actually refined, enacted, and implemented, decision makers must decide that a specific issue is important enough to merit serious consideration (Jansson, 2018).Some issues lack sufficient support to ensure that they are added to decision-makers’ agendas. Why might this be?Some issues lack sufficient support to ensure that they are added to decision-makers’ agendas. This may occur due to the fact that it isn’t easy as it may seem to get attention and support from decision makers which is why I previously noted that funding is needed so that the issue can get attention from the media. Decision makers may only act if they feel that the social issue is a severe need. Protest can also cause decision makers not to support a social issue. Policy advocates who use protests as a part of their strategy to secure policy changes should realize that they can sometimes harden the positions of some public officials against the reforms that they seek, and that protests can sometimes lead to a backlash by persons who oppose their policies (Jansson, 2018). Also if a social issue is not thoroughly researched and advocates aren’t able to tell decision markers why the issue needs to be addressed with significant research, it will be hard to persuade decision makers. Some issues receive significant attention from decision makers. Why might these issues easilyfind their way onto decision makers’ agendas?I think that some issues receive significant attention from decision makers as it is receives lots of attention from the media like the news. If a social issue is popular is it likely that decision makers will see it and act faster on it. Effective advocacy groups try to shape public officials’ agendas by pressuring them to consider solutions or problems, presenting research that underlines the impor-tance of addressing specific social needs, and publicizing stories in the mass media that dramatize certain issues (Jansson, 2018).ReferencesEdwards, H. R., & Hoefer, R. (2010). Are social work advocacy groups using Web 2.0 effectively? Journal of Policy Practice, 9(3/4), 220–239.Jansson, B. S. (2018). The Community Action Plan: Written Report and HandoutYour Portfolio Project for

The Community Action Plan: Written Report and HandoutYour Portfolio Project for this class is a Community Action Plan designed to alleviate or correct a public health issue in your community. Your community can be your business, school, neighborhood, town or city of residence or birth, or county. For option 2, your Community Action Plan (Obesity in Centralia, Washington) will be a professional portfolio that includes a written report and a handout. Below is a useful site where you can find an example of the elements of an action plan.http://www.cityofchicago.org/dam/city/depts/cdph/tobacco_alchohol_and_drug_abuse/LGBTCommunityActionPlanHC.pdf (Links to an external site.)Final Paper Instructions:Your case study should have four sections: Symptoms, Diagnosis, Cure, and Prevention. Each section should be about a page in length. Your entire paper must be 4-5 pages in length, not counting the title or reference pages, which must be included. Your paper must follow the CSU Global Writing Center (Links to an external site.).In the Symptoms section, describe the public health issue that you have observed in your community. What “symptoms” does it exhibit? Think about whom it affects, where it affects them, and how (Refer back to Module 5, CT 1).
In the Diagnosis section, discuss the causes of the issue and give examples of other communities that have suffered the same problem. How did those communities solve or attempt to address the issue?
In the Cure section, discuss possible options for a cure for this public health issue. How can you eradicate it or reduce its occurrence in your community?
In the Prevention section, discuss possible options for prevention of the public health issue that you have selected. How can you reduce the chance of people being impacted by your issue in the future?
You must back up your sections using at least two scholarly articles. You may use readings other than the textbook to meet this requirement. The paper should be based on references to scholarly materials (rather than on introductory textbooks, popular website writings, or musings, for example) and should support your claims with evidence.
Incorporate into this final plan any classmates’ critiques that you found useful, as well as your instructor’s feedback. Identify the key community members or partners that you plan on contacting, with an explanation why these individuals or organizations make sense as potential partners. This could include partners from your list of potential partners created in Week 4 Critical Thinking Assignment Option #1 or your interview of one key partner completed in Week 4 Critical Thinking Option #2. Incorporate them into a discussion of your plan; do not just list them.
Your case study should include a special emphasis on either the demographics of the affected population or the economic implications, depending on what Critical Thinking assignment you completed for Week 5.
You should also include a realistic timeline for your plan. Discuss the time needed for campaigning, education, funding, building, and implementation. Use ideas developed through Week 6 Critical Thinking Assignments, from either the annotated bibliography or the feedback on your detailed outline.
Final Instructions for the Handout:The handout that you will distribute to audience members describes the problem in your community and your action plan.
You may design this as an outline of your presentation or as a brochure, with highlighted key points, to accompany your presentation.
The purpose of this handout is twofold: to educate the audience about the issue and to help them follow along as you speak. Keep in mind that, in real life, you will have limited time to convince people of the gravity of the situation and to come on board with their support. As such, you want to be persuasive and get to the key points quickly and effectively.
Your handout must be supported by at least two scholarly articles.
You may use the readings other than the textbook for this course.
Note: Be sure to submit both your written report and your handout for this assignment. Both files should be uploaded in a single submission to the assignment submission page. The paper and preliminary deliverables must be well written and formatted in conformity with the CSU Global Writing Center (Links to an external site.).

InstructionsThe research on ASD treatment strongly suggests that parental participation in the implementation of any intervention plays an important role in improving outcomes. Especially with young children, parents are very likely to be the most influential person in a patient’s life; therefore, they may be the individuals most capable of implementing effective behavior change. Those parents will need training to become the change agents in their child’s life. This will involve providers assessing their child’s needs and goals, designing the appropriate (evidence-based, but individualized) intervention to address it, training the parents to conduct the intervention consistently and correctly, monitoring the patient’s progress, and adjusting the plan, as needed. In this assignment, imagine that you and Mrs. Rivera have identified one symptom of ASD she would most like to work on with Cody. An example would be that he does not make eye contact when interacting with others. (You can select whatever ASD symptom you choose to work on.)Describe some ideas that will help Mrs. Rivera to address that behavior. Your ideas must be based on related research and should include the following:Provide a specific, observable description of the symptomatic behavior.
Indicate a clear statement of your specific goals.
Explain your research-based strategy, with specifics about who, how, when, where, and why for each of the ideas.
Determine how you and Mrs. Rivera might be able to monitor Cody’s progress and adjust as needed.
Support your assignment with at least three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included.Length: 5-7 pages, not including title and reference pagesYour assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.
