Assignment: The Culture Paper INTERVIEWING, UNDERSTANDING, AND EXPLORING PUBLIC

Assignment: The Culture Paper INTERVIEWING, UNDERSTANDING, AND EXPLORING PUBLIC SPEAKING IN OTHER CULTURES v Page requirements: 2–3 pages Resources: Minimum two primary sources, one of which needs to be an interview (e.g. face-to-face, email, over the phone). Assignment Rationale The goal of this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to critically analyze and apply concepts, theories, and ideas you have learned in COMM 1020 to understand how another culture communicates verbally and nonverbally. Point Value The Culture Paper is worth 50 points. Please review the Culture Paper Rubric form in your student guidebook for point distributions. Written Assignment Criteria After reading Chapter 1 in the Student Guidebook, you will need to select a culture that you are not a part of. Feel free to think more broadly about culture – what is the culture of a restaurant kitchen, what is the culture of American soccer, etc. You may also write about a county’s culture – Germany, Japan, etc. For this paper, you will need to use a minimum of two primary sources – one being an interview. You will be interviewing someone who functions within the culture you are writing about. Think about the people around you, think about how you interact with them. For help with interview questions, consult Chapter 3 in the Student Guidebook. You will also need to apply a minimum of two of the cultural patterns to your culture. Chapter 1 outlines these cultural patterns. Your three Main Points should seek to build a commentary on the culture. How does that culture communicate? Think about the cultural dimensions – what evidence do you have of those? What does the research say? Avoid treating this as a history report. Work to find the communication and speaking styles embedded within cultural practices. Your three Main Points should be separate of each other and focus on the cultural dimensions and the interview. Very similar to your speeches, focus on how all three Main Points relate and flow with each other. GUIDING INTER VI EW QU E S TIONS • How do people in your culture tell stories? • Do they follow a linear pattern of an introduction, body, and conclusion? Or do they use an alternative organizational pattern? (e.g., spiral, wave, star patterns, call and response, narrative? • How does the speaker establish credibility? • What types of material is selected for supporting material? • What purposes do they speak? (e.g., informative, persuasive, celebration). • On what occasions do people speak? • What type of culture is represented? • Are they more or less collectivist or individualistic? • Do they have high or low power distance? • Are they are high or low context? • Do they view time as monochronic or polychronic time? • Plus, any other questions that you feel would help you better understand the culture’s views on public speaking. 1 Developed by Dr. Janet Colvin, Utah Valley University, Orem, Utah. References You must include a minimum of two primary sources in your Culture Paper. All sources must be cited according to the APA style guidelines. Chapter 2 in your student guidebook explains how to correctly cite in APA. Additionally, you will be interviewing someone for this assignment.

Question: There is an increasing push for health care professionals to become specialists. Along with specialization, often the same professions believe that we need to “credential” practitioners (i.e., board certification) those who wish to provide services to the public and present themselves as a specialist. The pattern of specialization and credentialing has a long history and has been developed and advanced most in the field of medicine (i.e., medical doctors). Do you believe that it is in the best interest of the public and the profession of psychology (e.g., clinical neuropsychology) to move in the direction of specialized training and credentialing before being allowed to provide services to the public?
