Audible! We’re going to listen to a podcast this week (get it?) instead of homework in the textbook. Here the task is different. The speaker, Sam Harris, considers many outside sources. Pick one of his statistical outside sources, use the internet to find this source, and then write a three part essay in which you identify what the data shows in the original source, and what claims if any the authors of that source make about their data. Then, compose an essay in which you compare the data in the original source to the claims made by Harris: does he accurately represent the data from the original? Does he use the data to reach conclusions that the data actually supports? In a final section, write about your personal response to this podcast, indicating the thoughts it provoked in you, and the lessons, if any, you learned from it. What problems, if any, do you find with Harris’ arguments, asides, or opinions?

Keep in mind the views of the podcaster are not necessarily my own views. Sam Harris has achieved fame for his polemical brand of anti-religious atheism, and he is well known as a progressive, and, interestingly, a member of the so-called “dark web” (cue scary music). But he is, if nothing else, excellent at the kind of dispassionate objective analysis that I am trying to impart to you all.  Plus he has cool intro music.

David Hume

Hume is a sentimentalist.  He says that, Though reason, when fully assisted and improved, be sufficient to instruct us in the pernicious or useful tendency of qualities and actions; it is not alone sufficient to produce any moral blame or approbation…It is requisite a sentiment should here display itself (Hume 282).  Explain and critically evaluate the five considerations that Hume gives in his Appendix in favor of sentimentalism.

Agile and Waterfall Methodologies

Find and share (APA) a resource that supports your thoughts to the following (you will have to search outside of the reading assignments to facilitate your answers):

1. What Methodology is currently used in your organization, Agile or Waterfall? If you are not currently working, research an organization and share their methodology. (Research an organization).

2.  what suggestions would you make to change the current methodology of your selected organization?

3. How should you manage this change according to the Bible?

The thread posting addresses all the question(s) in the  prompt; thoughtful analysis is evident (considers assumptions, analysis implications, compares/contrasts concepts). Minimum 300 words
Major points are supported by the Reading & Study materials; a minimum of 2 peer-reviewed journal articles; Biblical principles are integrated with support from scripture

Diversity and Health Assessments

May 2012, Alice Randall wrote an article for The New York Times on the cultural factors that encouraged black women to maintain a weight above what is considered healthy. Randall explainedfrom her observations and her personal experience as a black womanthat many African-American communities and cultures consider women who are overweight to be more beautiful and desirable than women at a healthier weight. As she put it, Many black women are fat because we want to be (Randall, 2012).

Randalls statements sparked a great deal of controversy and debate; however, they emphasize an underlying reality in the healthcare field: different populations, cultures, and groups have diverse beliefs and practices that impact their health. Nurses and healthcare professionals should be aware of this reality and adapt their health assessment techniques and recommendations to accommodate diversity.

In this Discussion, you will consider different socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors that should be taken into considerations when building a health history for patients with diverse backgrounds. Your Instructor will assign a case study to you for this Discussion.

To prepare:

Reflect on your experiences as a nurse and on the information provided in this weeks Learning Resources on diversity issues in health assessments.
By Day 1 of this week, you will be assigned a case study by your Instructor. Note: Please see the Course Announcements section of the classroom for your case study assignment.
Reflect on the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors related to the health of the patient assigned to you.
Consider how you would build a health history for the patient. What questions would you ask, and how would you frame them to be sensitive to the patients background, lifestyle, and culture? Develop five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build his or her health history and to assess his or her health risks.
Think about the challenges associated with communicating with patients from a variety of specific populations. What strategies can you as a nurse employ to be sensitive to different cultural factors while gathering the pertinent information?

Post an explanation of the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors associated with the patient you were assigned. Explain the issues that you would need to be sensitive to when interacting with the patient, and why. Provide at least five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build his or her health history and to assess his or her health risks.

SCENARIO:
