Term Paper

The purpose of the term paper is to test your understanding of this course in general and the ability to apply it to real-life examples. Please write the term paper up to 2 pages with at most 1 figure. And upload it in pdf or word formats.

Grading standards:
Scientific correctness: 6 pt
The novelty of ideas: 2 pt
Presentation (text and figure): 2 pt

You can choose one of the following term paper topics.

Topic: Show an example of conservation of momentum or angular momentum around you. Explain the physics and discuss what happens if conservation is (hypothetically) violated in this example.

Topic: Show an example of the conservation of energy (kinetic and potential) around you. Explain the physics and discuss what happens if conservation is (hypothetically) violated in this example.

Topic: Show an example of centrifugal acceleration around you. Explain the physics and discuss a potential application of it.

Topic: Show an example of the use of friction around you. Do you want the friction to be bigger or smaller in this example? Discuss the strategies that you can use to achieve the desired amount of friction in this example.

Topic: You are the chief designer for a hyperloop system connecting Los Angeles and New York non-stop! Assuming that we are limiting acceleration to be below 1g for safety. Draw a sketch of your proposed design, explain the operation of your hyperloop, state the potential challenges in construction/operation, and discuss potential solutions.

Topic: Draw a sketch of a mechanical gyroscope (any type as long as it is mechanical). Explain how it works. And discuss what you can do to improve its accuracy.

Topic: Following the examples of p = mv and K = 1/2 m v^2, let’s define a new quantity X = 1/3 m v^3, where X is a vector whose direction is the same as v. Will there be a conservation law related to this new vector X? Explain.

Topic: You would like to design a rocket to send 1 kg of load to the international space station from Cape Canaveral. For simplicity, use a solid-propellant rocket and use the ammonium perchlorate as rocket fuel. Draw a sketch of your rocket design, describe it (weight, fuel volume etc), and explain how it works.

New World

(PLEASE READ)

The content of this course has covered an understanding of Indigenous Latin American tribes, contact and conflict with European explorers and settlers, life under the Spanish and Portuguese empires in the New World, and finally, the various pushes for Latin American independence from European control. All of this follows the theme of our text: Exploration, Exploitation, and Resistance.

For this exam essay, what I would like to see is for you to show me your understanding of these changes that have occurred over time and across place – the work of historians. As always, there are a variety of ways in which you can do this. For example, we have discussed in great detail the changes brought about by the Catholic Church to Indigenous peoples. We have looked at trade and economic changes, we have looked at labor issues – from community participation to forced labor, to the slave labor of natives, imported African slaves, and eventually, a model based more on free choice and wage labor. We have looked at political changes over time – from tribal authority to empire-building and settlement of outsiders in this world to a fight for national sovereignty and independence from foreign control. We have looked at life under the constraints of outside control and with that the effects of a growing class and caste system that developed and evolved over time.

For your final essay, you may choose any of these focuses listed above – or one of your own – that shows the extensive change over time and across the place of Latin America from Pre-Columbus through to the fight for independence from European Empirical control. You may construct a simple narrative of the changes, you may create an argument and support your position (Latin America would have developed differently if not for.), or at the suggestion of a classmate, you may role-play (take on the persona of a person and his/her family for the several generations that encompass the time period).

Technical stuff: Any turn it in % over 20% will be an automatic F for the exam.

First Inaugural Address of Ronald Regan

When you analyze a primary source, you are undertaking the most important job of the historian.
There is no better way to understand events in the past than by examining the sourceswhether
journals, newspaper articles, letters, court case records, novels, artworks, music or
autobiographiesthat people from that period left behind. For this course, students will
complete one primary source analysis, which examines the historical setting, author and bias,
intent of the source, reception of the source, and its relevance to the study of United States
history of a selected source. The analysis should be 2-3 pages double spaced in length and follow
standard paper formatting (Times New Roman 12 pt. font, 1 inch margins).
It is important to remember that each historian, including you, will approach a source with a
different set of experiences and skills, and will therefore interpret the document differently.
Remember that there is no one right interpretation. However, if you do not do a careful and
thorough job, you might arrive at a wrong interpretation. In order to analyze a primary source
you need information about two things: the document itself, and the era from which it comes.
You can base your information about the time period on the readings you do in class and on
lectures. Any other sources of information must be cited. On your own you need to think about
the document itself. To help you in this, think about the following question for each theme.
Your examination of the historical setting should examine the context in which the document is
produced. What is going on in history during this time period? How does the historical setting
affect the document or situate it within American history? In terms of author and bias, ask
yourself, what do I know about the authorrace, sex, class, occupation, religion, age, region,
political beliefs, etc.? How do these things affect the source? Does the author have an inherent
bias that affects his/her perspective on the topic? NOTE: The author of the source is always a
historical person, and not Jermi Suri or the editor/author of The American Yawp Reader
that has compiled the sources.
Next, think about the authors intent in writing the document. Look at the purpose of the source.
What was the author’s message or argument? What was he/she trying to get across? Is the
message explicit, or are there implicit messages as well? Also, how does the author try to get the
message across? What methods does he/she use? Who constituted the intended audience? Was
this source meant for one person’s eyes, or for the public? How does that affect the source?
From there, I want you to look at how the source was received. How did people respond to it? Is
it prescriptive (telling you what people thought should happen) or descriptive (telling you what
people thought did happen)? Does it describe ideology and/or behavior?
Finally, address the relevance of this source to United States History. What historical questions
can you answer using this source? What are the benefits of using this kind of source? What
questions can this source NOT help you answer? What are the limitations of this type of source?

Basic Questions

1. Create a survey of 5 questions with the following 5 level scale: Strongly Agree, Agree, Uncertain, Disagree, and Strongly Disagree. Your questions must revolve facial recognition systems. Make sure the questions are generic and not personal.
2. Survey Research: Generally speaking, what are some advantages and disadvantages to doing survey research? Provide an example where the use of surveys (in-person, self report, etc) might be a good idea?
3. Sampling. Describe how probability sampling techniques could provide samples more representative of a target population than simple random sampling. Illustrate your answer with a information technology example.
4.What are the activities involved in conducting a qualitative research design?
5. What are the activities involved in conducting a quantitative research design?
6. There are three very important elements to every research design that must be considered: Validity, Reliability, and Generalizability. What do these three terms mean and why are they so important?
