Choose one of the four prompts below and write a response of 3 to 5 double-spaced pages. While no outside research is necessary, your essay should engage with the assigned course readings and concepts and themes we have discussed in class.
The essay is a chance for you to demonstrate three things: 1) your understanding of course material, 2) your ability to think critically about course material, and 3) your ability to construct clear and convincing written arguments.
You need not directly answer every question included the prompt, but you should construct an essay that clearly addresses the overall thrust of your chosen prompt.
PROMPT: Putnam argued that television, through its effects on civil society and social capital, was detrimental to democracy. Can we extend his argument to the internet? Why or why not? Are there other ways, not foreseen by Putnam or not applicable to television, that the internet affects democracy and social capital, whether positively or negatively? Are we really putting democracy at risk the more time we spend staring at our illuminated screens, whether they belong to a television, computer, or phone?

For this paper you have a choice between two possible topics. Please select one of the following:
1. It is 2026 and you are part of a team along with four other researchers about to develop a breakthrough vaccine for Covid-22 which is much more infectious than Covid-19 and causes more fatalities. Unfortunately, each one of the five of you suffers a significant and potentially fatal health challenge. You need an immediate heart transplant, another team member needs a kidney transplant, one needs a liver, another needs lungs and the final member needs a cornea transplant. Without treatment, none of you will be able to complete the research leading to the vaccine. You learn that there is a single person, we’ll call him Bob, who is a perfect organ match for each of you. Unfortunately, acquiring the organs would require kidnapping and harvesting Bob’s organs involuntarily (in other words, Bob would have to die). Bob is not a very nice person, he has no family, no friends, and no job. Should we harvest Bob’s organs to eventually allow the vaccine to be developed or leave Bob alone and perhaps allow the pandemic to rage uncontrolled? What would be the right thing to do in this situation? Answer this question from the perspectives of each of the following moral theories: Divine Command, Ethical Egoism, Act Utilitarianism, and Kantian Ethics. Conclude by discussing which theory you believe provides the most just and rational resolution to the issue. Remember to include a brief summary of each theory before applying it to the situation at hand.
2. It is the year 2525. The Galactic Committee of the Milky Way has ordered an emergency meeting regarding the planet Earth. Apparently, there has been more than the usual amount of conflict, pestilence and strife on Earth during the preceding 100 years and the Central Committee is not pleased. You are the galactic philosophical officer in charge of Earth and your job is to convince the Committee that Earth is in need of serious political reform. But how should this reform proceed? That is your job to figure out. Choose one of the following theories and argue that it is the path that Earth should be put on to end the strife and bring peace to the planet: Plato’s Political Philosophy, Machiavelli’s Realism, Social Contract Theory, Marxism, Classical Liberalism. Remember to discuss what the theory is before applying it to the situation at hand.
Your paper should be 2 to 3 pages in length. Please double space, use normal margins (no padding) and a 10 to 12 point font. Acceptable document forms for your submission are Word and PDF.

First Step:Chapter 15- What did you find most interesting in this chapter? Elaborate on why.(200 words)
Second Step: response to the following two posts. (100 words each)
1. I found the discussion of realism vs. liberalism to be an interesting topic. Personally I would agree with the ideas of realism. Maybe this is just my perspective but I find it very obvious that most large powers operate within other nations as a means to bolster their own influence and resources. As the text references, the lack of full scale United States intervention in Syria reflects the ideas of realism as there was no substantial gains to be had from entering the conflict and therefore Obama’s administration refused to act. From this point I begin to think about all of the excuses used to justify the many engagements in the middle east as a means to promote regional stability and to protect both the United States and local inhabitants from terrorist threats. I hope that most understand that this is far from the truth It is quite clear that as Syria posed a very real danger to those being abused with conventional and chemical weaponary, you begin to think as to why the United States failed to truly intervene. As with many views of the United States, it seems that having the ability to pick and choose when we are the “world police” is a clearly viably option for many administrations. I am obviously aware of the variety of factors that effect the decisions to enter into these engagements but there are times when it is just far too obvious how narcissistic United States foreign policy can be.
2. Throughout the chapter, I found the section on nongovernmental and intergovernmental organizations to be the most interesting one. IGO’s and NGO’s hold so much power that is unimaginable and unattainable for any one government to hold. These organizations have an influence in almost every major public policy area that exists throughout the world. These organizations provide aid for humanitarian crises, advocate for those who cannot, provide health care for those in underprivileged areas, control international monetary funds and so much more. For example, after the explosion in Beirut in Lebanon, NGOs were on the ground providing aid where they needed to do so. After Hurricane Katrina, NGOs were doing the same in the U.S. helping out where they can and when they can. Even after the COVID pandemic reached the heights that it reached. Countries all over the world came to each other’s aid and these organizations were the ones who were distributing these resources all over the world as well as providing assistance to those in need. These organizations, whether funded and controlled by governments or not, also somehow keep the different governments accountable for their actions. Since there is a lack of an international government, in my opinions these organizations take the place of a government. Even though it is not a legit government they do a pretty good job at holding other countries accountable for their actions, and the other incentives that it holds as well. The United Nations (UN) is one of these organizations. If any country is caught not following the rules that the UN enforces, that country risks losing membership into the UN and the advantages that it brings to their country. Although the UN is only an organization, not a government and not a country it holds similar responsibilities on the world stage.

Prompt: Our course spent the semester looking at six different lens/theories/perspectives/frameworks to understand inequality along social categorical lines, especially race. The theories also provided us with an idea of how society organizes around lineages of power. For example, if one is looking at American society from a “racial lens” one could see how advantages are awarded to communities across “racial lines.” In other words, one can see how race structures social relationships (power dynamics) in the U.S. shaping the allocation of advantages/privileges to individuals or groups.
