Reports need to be at least three full pages, double spaced and you should cite multiple sources (your citations list does not count as a page for the page count). You can be very conversational during your report, but don’t be colloquial. This means that you can write your report as if you’re telling a story, but don’t use filler words or phrases to pad your writing. For instance, “As we all know, cybersecurity is an issue in today’s world.” That phrase does nothing to advance the story and just takes up space.
Here’s another way to consider the assignment – you and I share an affinity for all the cool cybersecurity things. We think it’s cool that social engineering happens, and we can appreciate the need for hashing passwords and the occasional salt. But not everyone does. Jack Rhysider does a really good job translating the mundane and technical parts of cybersecurity into gripping tales that anyone can listen to. Think of this as your opportunity to do the same. Sure, he injects his commentary in there, but you can, too! Just make sure your commentary accentuates the story. If you’re feeling loquacious, feel free to go over the requisite three pages.
Sharpen up your storytelling skills! You will need to have facts about the event you are talking about, as well as a summary that informs the reader of how it could have been prevented. Oftentimes, there are several indicators that were ignored (phishing along with a RAT and maybe weak passwords).
Furnish examples that demonstrate cybersecurity practices constantly need improvement
Provide examples protecting yourself in a digital environment
Provide recommendations for staying safe
Describe (and debrief) a noteworthy hack or breach
