Overview
• Choose a social movement you are active in, or would like to be. It does not have to be a social movement we covered in the course (check with your professor first if you are not sure your idea works for this assignment)
• Must be a current social movement where community organizing or activism is happening, that has been actively mobilizing within the last 5 years and that is still within the cycle of contention (i.e. has not gone into decline and ended).
• Individual assignment
Movement Action Plan Content
If you could advise people within this movement what to do in order to achieve the movements goals and bring about (further) positive social change what would this be? Create a movement action plan!
Your movement action plan must, *within reason*, be realistic (and lawful). For example, it does not make sense to plan as though you will have unlimited resources, you will not advise on abducting people as a way to recruit them, etc.
Movement action plans need to be grounded in social movement theory. We have been learning the evidence of what makes a successful movement throughout the course. Draw on this theory by citing a minimum of four (4) peer-researched academic references in your action plan.
Your action plan should be guided by the following questions (depending on the movement some aspects may not apply, or may be overlapping):
Overview of the Social Movement
• Describe the specifics of the movement (i.e. for example, within environmentalism there
are different aspects, or movements within movements)
• What type of movement is this? (4 types of movement)
• How would you characterize this movement? (5 ways to characterize social movement)
• What is going on with this movement in the current moment? Cite current (within the last
month) news articles, blogs or social media posts (etc.)
Movement Goals
• What are the movements current goals? Do you think the movement should shift its goal?
If so, what would the new goals be and why?
Leadership
• What is the structure of the movement’s leadership? What impact does the leadership
have on how this movement operates?
• Do you think this form of leadership is effective for this movement? Why or why not? If
you were to advise on a new structure for leadership what would it be, and why?
Recruitment
• Who makes up the membership of this movement? What individuals are involved? What
groups are involved? (i.e. SMO, grassroots, etc.) How do they get recruited?
• Do you think this way of recruiting is effective for this movement? Why or why not? If
you were to advise on new methods of recruitment what would they be, and why?
• What other groups or individual could be recruited to participate in this movement? What
strategies or tactics could these participants contribute to furthering the movement? Issue Framing
• How are the movements issues of contention being framed? Show an example.
• Do you think this way of framing issues is effective for this movement? Why or why not?
If you were to advise on new way(s) of framing issues what would they be, and why? Strategies and Tactics
• What are the strategies and tactics the movement uses currently? Do you think these strategies and tactics are effective for this movement? Why or why not? If you were to advise on new strategies and tactics what would they be, and why?
Mobilization
• What popular education approaches are used to recruit, sustain and /or revive movement
mobilization? If you were to advise on new approaches are used to recruit, sustain and /or revive movement mobilization what would they be, and why?
Further Research
• What further research could be done to better understand this movement and its
potential? How would you carry out this research?
FORMAT
Students should write their reflection in Word format, using 8 1⁄2 x 11” paper with 1-inch margins in 12pt Times New Roman font, in report format (subtitles, bullet points, and visuals can be used). Report must include:
