The paper should be at least six doubled spaced pages in length note this is NOT counting the title page or the references (typically 6 to 8 pages of text). Most likely, if you wait until the last minute to work on the paper, your paper will be poorer than if you worked on it over the course of the semester. You will need to turn in a paper topic by September 21. You may select your own subject on which the analysis will be based, (which I must approve). If necessary, I can assist you to help narrow your subject choice, or steer you in a different direction entirely. Note: you can change subjects at a later date if your original choice does not pan out. Your paper will consist of a theoretical analysis of the motivational, or management style conducted by someone in the “public eye”, i.e., a business leader, sports manager, or even social leader. This person must be sufficiently “public” and can be fiction, or non-fiction so long as there is sufficient information on their motivational style through whatever media is available. These biographical source materials will not count as “peer reviewed sources”, but the theory and analysis of the style of their motivation, or management should be resourced from “peer reviewed sources”, which we will discuss in detail in class. After you have picked your subject, you will need to find relevant research. You should conduct a search for articles or resources on your topic in psycINFO, psycARTICLES or similar search engines that find empirical sources. You can get them from the library website. Some ways you can search for articles include: using your topic area as a keyword, the title of the article cited in the text in the title field or using the authors’ names in the authors field. Once you find a relevant article, you can click on links to the articles that the authors cited or to links that cite that article. This method of finding articles should lead you to have a number of closely related articles to work with. You can have more references than seven, but that is the minimum to get full credit. The paper is due uploaded to Blackboard through the Turn it In program, December 9, 2020, by 11:59PM, otherwise it is late. Late papers will result in a three point deduction from your score for every day late (including weekends), and will not be accepted past the end of the term, or 12/17/20. Your literature review must include a minimum of five articles from peer-reviewed (academic) journals, text books, web sites, or other appropriate sources, with at least two of these articles being empirical in nature (involving collection and analysis of data). Magazines, or other indirect sources including your text book are not acceptable for meeting this requirement. Your paper should be double-spaced using a word processor (Font: Times New Roman, size 12 or Garamond, size 12). Please follow the basic style and format in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed., 2009). Grading: This is an APA style research paper. You should have a clear thesis, an organized structure to the paper and back up your claims with research evidence. It is often a good idea to lay out the points you will make in the introduction. For example, if you are analyzing the motivational management style of Vince Lombardi, you might mention in the introduction that the paper will cover the physiological, behavioral, cognitive and emotional approaches to his management style. If you make a claim in the paper, be sure to cite your source in APA style. Avoid make sweeping generalizations (such as: since the beginning of time, or the evidence proves that theory Y is correct. Evidence can support or be consistent with a theory, but it cannot prove the theory is correct). You will need to proof read your paper as spelling and grammar checks are usually not sufficient. I will post writing tips on Blackboard and we will discuss any questions you might have in class, or during office hours. You will be graded with the following scheme: 1) Title page and headers in the text in correct APA style 2) Depth of Information (Does the paper only hit a cursory level of analysis, or does it go into greater depth on the topic) 3) Analysis and critical thinking 4) Clarity (How effective is the writing including style and grammar?) 5) Citations in the text in APA format 6) References in APA style (Are all citations listed in the references and all references cited in the text?) Papers that do not have at least six pages of text will be docked 5 points per missing page prior to being graded on content.
