Imagine that Charles Perrow and Diane Vaughan are in a dialogue concerning the relevance of their accounts of organizational failures and major accidents, and you are speaking on their behalf. The subject of the debate is whetherVaughan’s explanation of “organizational-technical” accidents – as described in the Challenger case – also applies to the Three Mile Island (TMI) disaster? In your essay, firstconcisely explain at least one main way you might apply Vaughan’s theory to all or parts of Perrow’s account of TMI. Second, concisely explain how you believe Perrow would respond to the accusation that his account ofthe “normal accident” at TMI is really a case of an organizational technical accident. Finally, you get the last word: take a position on the “fit” of the two theoretical frameworks – was TMI better characterized as a normal accident, or organizational-technical? Why?

Although networks are associated with rapid flows of information important to bo

Although networks are associated with rapid flows of information important to both disseminating knowledge and generating innovation, authors including Boltanski & Chiappello, Perrow, and Whitford & Schrank noted the challenges associated with governing “loosely coupled” organizations (in Perrow’s language) and/or the network form of organization that has come to the fore in many contemporary organizational fields. Such challenges seemed strikinglypresent in Lakoff’s account of efforts to effectively maintain cooperation among national governments, and within the international network of ‘sentinel’ devices designed to identify and address potential pandemics. In your answer: (a) Explain what you see as the two main specific challenges associated with maintaining the global ‘preparedness’ network, specifying why they are major challenges; (b) Explain how those challenges are similar to or different from the common kinds of network failures or organizational weaknesses described in Perrow’s, and in Whitford & Schrank’s discussions of “loosely coupled” systems and “network failures”, respectively. (c) Finally, concisely explain whether you believe the main difficulties you described could be effectively redressed through altering governance tactics in the global pandemic network. Be specific in explaining why/why not there are likely potentials for network remediation of the challenges you identified in part (a). Bonus Question 3: Innovation Networks in the Classroom? At the beginning of section III of the course, multiple authors asserted that networks were central to innovation. In no more than half a page (you can go over the 6 page limit if you decide to answer this question), explain whether or not you think the ‘network model’ could be effectively applied to senior level courses at SMU as a mechanism to foster more innovative ideas among students. Give at least one main reason why the lessons for innovative production would/would not apply to advanced undergraduate education.

Using the key issues in their essay (Massey &Denton on Segregation, please reference at least four assigned readings we have discussed during the semester. For example, you can use Mills’s Sociological Imagination, Jacobs’ essays on urban planning, Wilson’s thesis on urban poverty, issues of sustainability, policing, gentrification, displacement…any four readings that can align Massey and Denton with some of the topics we have discussed during the semester.
The best way to put together your paper would be to read the linked article “Segregation and the Making of the Underclass” and then use the readings we went over this term as your response. Outline what Massey and Denton have to say, and then tie in four readings that we have discussed in class. Do not simply summarize in your reply. Interpret and show me that you can analyze the arguments made and their relevance.
Please do not use any other sources than those assigned. Be sure to properly cite and do not cut and paste from the readings. When you reference a reading from class please do so in bold letter font. Please make it easy for me to identify which essays you are writing about in your paper. I think about five – seven pages should be sufficient.
