The Covid-19 crisis proved perilous for many families. If parents lose their jobs due to the crisis, their families face eviction. The pandemic has prompted a spike in families relying on food pantries for their food. More people, including children are dealing with increased anxiety and depression at this difficult time.
The Frontline Documentary Growing Up Poor in America follows three children and their families as the COVID-19 pandemic amplifies their struggle to stay afloat.
Directions: For this assignment you are required to view the film. After watching the film, in a 2-3 page essay answer the following questions:
1. How has the Coronavirus changed what it’s like to live in poverty?
2. Were mental health issues like depression and attention deficit disorder prevalent in the communities shown in the film?
3. Some of the children in the film were very concerned about the wellbeing of their parents. Did you see any “role reversal” in these families?
4. How did the fact that the families relied on food pantries impact the wellbeing of the parents and the children?
