Society’s response to crime has changed over the past century. The approach of rehabilitation in the 1960s has gradually been replaced with a “get tough on crime” approach, bringing in mandatory sentencing laws and long prison sentences. Regardless of the approach, crime continues to be a problem, and recidivism for some crimes and some offenders remains high. In this assignment, you will explore society’s response to crime and different concepts of justice.

Based on your research and the discussions so far, analyze the usefulness of the ideas of justice in lowering recidivism. Address the following:

  • Is restorative justice useful in lowering the rate of recidivism? For which types of crimes and offenders is it most useful? Make sure to include any demographic information that may be useful in defending this type of “justice.”
  • Is procedural or moral justice more applicable for this aim? For which types of crimes and offenders is it most useful? Make sure to include any demographic information that may defend one or the other.
  • Which type of justice is most useful based on the psychological theories of crime? For which types of crimes and offenders is it most useful?

Make sure your essay includes the following:

The goal of this creative writing exercise is to write an alternate ending to one of several stories that we have read throughout the semester. The writing of this alternate ending should take into consideration other readings that have been seen in class, as well as audiovisual materials and discussions. The stories will be five pages long.

This is an opportunity for you to engage with the class topics in a critical way through creativity, and thus demonstrate how each of you formulates innovative and interesting ways of thinking about topics covered during the course. We have seen how various authors, theorists, and filmmakers have represented the great events and themes that their countries experienced, and now it is your turn to see how you interpret and understand them today starting from creative fiction.

This is a creative exercise whose purpose is to make us think and put into practice the difficult task of giving shape to how we see, understand, and feel the historical events of the continent Latin American.

Finally, it is important to keep in mind the formal and technical elements of creative writing, as we have done when analyzing fictional texts in class (narrative voice, plot,
setting, characters, conflict, time, etc.) when writing their stories.

For this project, you will create a PowerPoint® presentation in which you research three government organizations. One must be a federal agency and one must be a state or local agency. The third organization can be federal, state, or local, based on your own interests.

You should be able to do a simple internet search to find state or local agencies. For example, the search terms “Michigan environment” will return the website of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment (http://www.michigan.gov/deq/).

To find local agencies, you may want to start at the locality’s website and choose an agency from there. For example, you could find the Department of Parks & Recreation for the city of Lansing, MI, by going to the city website (http://www.lansingmi.gov) and searching the listing of departments. Remember, most government websites will end with a .gov or .org suffix.

In your PowerPoint presentation, you will graphically describe the structure of each organization; explain the organizations’ responsibilities and services in the public sector.

·  Analyze the roles of these agencies within their political systems by discussing

the duties, practices, and processes of these public organizations

·  Provide three or more examples of these organizations’ administrative and managerial processes

·  Research a current policy issue related to each agency

·  Highlight each agency’s role in the policy issue (is the agency responsible for

developing the policy, for implementation, etc.?)

·  Report on the current stage/status of the policy issue

·  Propose next steps that each agency should take

·  Be sure to consult and cite at least 2 credible resources, not including the course textbook

Your presentation should be at least 9 slides with at least 3 slides per organization section. Each section should include the name of the organization, an organizational chart (ex. FEMA http://www.fema.gov/pdf/about/org_chart.pdf), a description of the responsibility of the organization (what services they provide to the public), and the policy issue for each of the three organizations.

In addition to fulfilling the specifics of the Assignment, a successful presentation must also meet the following criteria:

·  Length should be at least 9 slides, not including the title slide and references slide

·  Speaker notes should be included in paragraph form for all slides except the title slide and reference slide

·  Assignment should follow the conventions of Standard American English (correct grammar, punctuation, etc.).

·  Writing should be well ordered, logical, and unified, as well as original and insightful

·  Your work should display superior content, organization, style, and mechanics

·  Appropriate citation style should be followed.
