Retirement Psychology Assignment

In the article entitled Touchy-Feely Finances: How to Find Out What You Really Want From Your MoneyPreview the document you learned about an idea that originates with Bill Bachrach in “Values-Based Financial Planning”. He talks about using a series of questions to delve progressively deeper into the psychology of a retirement saver. If you become a financial professional, it is imperative for your professional success that you form relationships with your clients. They are people and not just someone needing a billable service.

You need two “clients” for this project. Identify them as “Client 1” and “Client 2” in your paper… no real names, please.

CLIENT 1: someone who is young and has likely not yet begun planning for retirement. This person will preferably be either a peer of yours or roughly college-aged. They cannot be a student who has taken financial planning classes as you are.

CLIENT 2: someone in your life who is approximately 5 to 15 years away from retirement.
Once you have identified your two target clients, you need to ask them a series of progressively deeper questions. The intention is for you to get to know your “clients” in a more intimate way. Focus on finding out what their retirement goals are, how have they begun to prepare, how adequate is their preparation, and what emotions do they exhibit surrounding the concept of retirement.

Bill Bachrach begins with the question, What is important about money to you? I would like you to begin with, What are your top two retirement goals? If someone were to answer with, My top two goals are to have a comfortable retirement and to travel extensively. Then your follow up question should be, How would you feel if you achieved these goals? Then when they respond, ask why that feeling is important. Try alternating between why something is important and how it would make them feel. Go through 3 or 4 levels if your subject is willing. After you dig down to a core emotion linked to the desired retirement outcome, ask your subject if there is a certain financial dollar amount that would correspond with the stated emotion. If the subjects base emotion is fear, then ask what minimum dollar amount in retirement would make them feel fear-free. This exercise will help you to become better acquainted with your subject, and it will benefit both the professional and the client.

What do you need to include in your paper?

1.The first labeled section of your paper should be for Client 1. Discuss what you learned from them.

2.The second labeled section of your paper should be for Client 2. Discuss what you learned from them. You can also contrast the differences between the two in this second section.

3.The last section of your paper should detail what you learned from this process overall.

Dark matter and Dark energy

APA FORMAT

Lab #2 Dark Matter and Dark Energy

If it turns out to be that the universe is not made of cold dark matter, I would be rather depressed, given that I’ve worked all my life on cold dark matter. I would be disappointed, but not for very long because that’s the way science is. You have to accept the evidence. And if it turns out that I wasted my life working on the wrong hypothesis, so be it. What I really want to know is what is the universe made of. Let it be cold. Let it be warm. I just want to know what it is. Professor Carlos Frenk, who’s spent his life researching Dark Matter

In this lab we will examine the evidence for Dark Matter and Dark Energy and look at some recent research results. We will go through the scientific process and despite not being experts (or science majors!) you will present your findings at the end of this study.

The parts to your report will not be a formal lab report but rather in the following format for both Dark Matter and Dark Energy:

Dark Matter

1) What observations led to the proposal of Dark Matter? Typically in science, you do not come up with an extension of your theory or propose a new hypothesis unless new data contradicts existing ideas. In other words, why did scientists begin proposing that there was a new particle or type of matter that got named Dark Matter?

2) What other hypothesis exist for explain the observations you listed in part #1 if any?

3) What is currently known about Dark Matter?

4) What are some of the current unknowns of Dark Matter?

5) What future experiments are being done that can shed light on Dark Matter?

6) In light of all of this, what is your personal opinion on Dark Matter and its validity as a scientific explanation?

Employee Development and Performance Appraisal

You are the vice president of a human resources department and Susan has been your executive assistant for one (1) year. She effectively completes her given assignments, sometimes ahead of schedule.  Susan has a welcoming personality and is commended on her willingness to help when asked. As a result of her efficiency, Susan often has spare time on her hands.
In several conversations, you have spoken with Susan about taking a proactive stance and involving herself in the business to increase her knowledge base. You have suggested she attend strategic planning meetings, shadow other Business Partners, and take professional development courses geared towards human resources.   Susan has not incorporated any of these suggestions.
The organization promotes and encourages employee development and has a requirement of 24 professional development (PD) hours for each employee per annual review cycle.  As VP of the department, you have offered to mentor Susan; yet she has not taken advantage of the offer. Given Susan’s capabilities and potential, you want to mutually establish future performance goals and developmental opportunities to enhance her effectiveness and maximize her organizational contributions.
Susan’s professional appearance and interaction with co-workers is superb.  When asked to complete a task, she fulfills the assignment willingly and with very few errors.  She is well liked and respected by her peers.  She has impeccable oral and written communication skills. Overall, you are pleased with her performance but want to see Susan take initiative to seek out tasks to complete rather than waiting to be told what to do.
As the VP of HR, you have been tasked with a two part assignment. In part one of this assignment you will explain the importance of performance appraisals, analyze the essential elements which should be included and describe how performance appraisals can be used to promote employee growth. In part two of this assignment you will create a performance appraisal for Susan.
Your paper should be 8-10 pages in length incorporating both parts I and II.  You can either design a performance appraisal document or use an existing template.  The performance appraisal should be no more than 3 pages of the total page count for the assignment.  Be sure your paper addresses all of the following components:
Part I: Importance of Performance Appraisals:

Explain how performance appraisals can be used as part of employee development.
Explain why rankings are given to employees and the advantages and disadvantages of including rankings.
Address why organizations should deliver appraisals in a timely manner to employees.
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of three different types of performance appraisals. Make a recommendation of which type of performance appraisal is most appropriate for Susan.
Provide suggestions on how the manager can give feedback on a continual basis to the employee to encourage continual development.

Part II: Susan’s Performance Evaluation
As the VP of HR, you are providing Susan with feedback on these areas and suggesting ways to develop in the areas where she is not meeting expectations as outlined in the scenario. The performance appraisal directly ties to compensation increases. The appraisal should highlight achievements over the past year; while addressing expectations and setting goals moving forward.
The performance evaluation should address the following areas: Professional Development Job performance Communication – internal and external Professional Demeanor Working relationships Compensation recommendations
