University of North Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice Paper

Think about nursing practice and describe one barrier that you feel prohibits nurses from engaging in EBP; share one strategy you could use to facilitate the use of evidence to help improve nursing care for patients.

I feel one barrier that prevents EBP is the amount of ADNs currently in practice. I can say that as an associate prepared nurse, although I certainly heard of EBP, I did not give much time, thought or effort to it. Ignorance is bliss. My journey becoming a BSN has showed me the beauty and necessity of EBP. Knowledge is essential. The University of Florida reports that completing a BSN “enables nurses to incorporate evidence-based practice in nursing and move into leadership roles” (2016). By keeping up to date with the ever evolving practice of medicine, I can improve nursing care. Our textbook tells us “by monitoring and acting on outcomes achieved with evidence-based care, nurses are able to continuously adapt their care to the changing needs of patients” (2018). We need to be informed, up to date, and actively assessing/measuring patient outcomes!

Reflect back over your time in the course and describe how your thinking has changed about nursing research and evidence-based practice; describe one new learning during this course that you believe was the most helpful.

Each class I have taken thus far in my BSN journey has led to me the importance of EBP. This class really sealed the deal. I feel I can understand the importance of my role as a nurse. AS our textbook states “It is important to promote nursing research to improve the health of individuals” (2018). This is one us as nurses to promote. Advocating for our patients, is making sure they receive the best, up to date care and if they are not, then finding out why they are not. It gives me a sense of power to know our importance!

360-Degree Appraisal

360-Degree Appraisal
The 360-degree appraisal approach entails collecting performance information from several workers who interact with the employee being evaluated. For example, information can be collected from supervisors, subordinates, customers, and peers. In some situations, employees also evaluate their own work as a part of the 360-degree appraisal process. The 360-degree appraisal is designed to provide a comprehensive perspective on an employees performance. Some organizations use the 360-degree appraisal process mainly for developmental purposes because the results can be contradicting. The 360-degree appraisal process is a helpful foundational step to learning an employees strengths and weaknesses and then using that information for generating goals for MBO. Most employees prefer the 360-degree appraisal process because of its comprehensiveness and the amount of information that emerges from multiple sources. The following image is an example of different individuals who could potentially evaluate an employee during a 360-degree appraisal.
Potential Individuals Involved in a 360-Degree Feedback Appraisal Process

1.    Create a slide presentation that you will be presenting to your entire organization relating to the implementation of a 360-degree feedback appraisal process. Prepare 14 slides and foot notes to go along with each.
2.    Make a persuasive presentation. As the VP of HR (known for being creative and intelligent), your task will be to define this unique performance management appraisal tool, how it will be implemented, the added value to each employee of using this type of system, and what the consequences might be of an employee receiving a low rating.
3.    Use at least 6 scholar level sources to help strengthen your discussion. Reference all material cited.
