Stoicism and Aristotle on Emotions

Instructions:  This will be an oral final exam.  You will meet me via Zoom at your chosen time (see schedule).  The exam will be 15 minutes total.  You will give an 8-10 minute presentation on one of the prompts below.  The remainder of the time you will be responding to questions I will ask you about your presentation.

After the exam, send me a 3×5 note card with your name and thesis statement.  You may use notes for your presentation, but do not read it to me.

Stoicism and Aristotle on Emotions:  Aristotle thinks that emotion is essential to being virtuous. The courageous person, for example, experiences fear in the right way towards the right things.  Only the reckless person has no fear.  Does the stoic agree with this?  Epictetus says that our emotions are up to us, but that we should not be upset by things that are not up to us.  Does this mean that the good stoic has no fear?  Drawing from passages in Epictetus handbook and Aristotles Nicomachean Ethics, explain whether you think the Stoic and Aristotle disagree about the role of emotions in our life.

The topic is about the books theme of slavery

In three pages or so, explain how an outside text of your choice enhances reading Beloved. Your task is to put your primary text (the novel) into conversation with your lens text (a poem, song, essay, speech, or video). In defending your explanation, dig into both texts and be detailed in your analysis. You need not indeed, you should not cover every aspect of the novel, but your thesis should reflect an intelligent and insightful reading of Morrisons classic work through the lens of your chosen text.

Sophisticated syntax (variety of sentence patterns) and vocabulary
Liberal use of quoted words, phrases, and sentences
    Thought-provoking conclusion

Company paper analysis

Company paper analysis: Using the analytical tools each of you will learn, each student will prepare an analysis of a public company.  The company will be evaluated from the perspective of both fixed income securities (e.g., would you buy the bonds in the medium to long-term?) and equity securities (e.g., would you buy or sell the stock in the medium to long-term?).

Retail companies make the best selection.

Approaches to the analysis should include:

Current state of the financial health of the company
Trends in the financial health over recent years and potentially into the future
Comparison of the subject company with competitors and/or industry sector
Analysis of the subject companys industry sector
o    Factors affecting the industry such as product, technical innovation, regulation, economic cycles, etc.
Assessing the companys position within the industry context
o    Is it a leader?
o    Does it have a clear advantage vis a vis other industry participant?
o    Is it subject to extreme competition or pricing pressure?
