Vitamin Supplements, health & medical homework help

I am participating in a 5 year study called the Vital Study. This longterm study, is investigation whether taking a dietary supplement of Vitamin D and /or Omega-3 fatty kids will reduce the risk of developing cancer, heart disease, and stroke. You can about it in this link http://www.vitalstudy.org/QA.html#whatis (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

This study, in addition to researching the above goals is also examining whether taking Vitamin D or Omega-3 Fatty acids will lower the risk of the following: diabetes, high blood pressure, memory loss, autoimmune conditions, bone fractures, anemia, eye problems, infections, asthma, depression, chronic knee pain symptoms and atrial fibrillation.

This large study is being done because though many people are taking these supplements, there is no definitive proof that they work in the way they are intended. I decided to participate because I think the results will be important.

Should a vegan or vegetarian include supplements to augment their diet? If so, what are the pros and cons one should consider when taking supplements? No matter your diet preferences, what do you think of vitamin supplements? Should they be a part of good health? Should one rely on diet exclusively? What resources should you use to determine what and how much of a supplement you will take?
