Virtual Section 5

My dear friends, happy Monday 🙂

This week we have one discussion board, consisting of two parts like just like the last week.

In Part 1, we have two questions to consider for analyzing the readings for Week 5.

In Part 2, we are focusing on writing and researching skills and aiming to formulate and get peer feedback on our Level-3 questions that we will be using for Assignment #2.

PART 1:

For Part 1, please answer both questions (~300 words per answer).

Drawing and citing specifically from this weeks readings:

1. Plato presents Socrates as a martyr to truth. Do you agree?  Please draw from two different dialogues in the Trial and Death of Socrates in your answer.  How do you see Socrates?

2. Please select and contrast two passages, one from an Epicurean and one from a Stoic author. Which, in your opinion, offers greater insight and wisdom?”

PART 2:

Please share the Level-3 question you are planning on using in Assignment #2 in a sentence.  Then, please comment and give feedback on another Level-3 question posted by someone else.  In your feedback, please consider the following points:

1. Is it a Level-3 question? Is it a good one and why?

2. Is it specific enough? Can it be narrowed down any further?

3. Does it include at least two specific pre-modern traditions covered in MMW 121R (one from Week 1 and another one from any part of the course) per Assignment #2 requirements?

4. Is it about using these specific pre-modern traditions to resolve/address a contemporary issue per the writing project requirements?

Please let me know if you have any questions.

part 3: oral history final essay

1. Section on the interview (200-300 words suggested):
    * Background on your subject and why you chose her
    * How you developed your questions
    * How the interview was conducted (where/when/what format)
    * What did you learn that you didnt know about your subject?
    * What surprised you?
    * Was the process easy/difficult? Did she answer the questions you wanted to ask?

2. Analysis of the interview (700-1000 words suggested):
    * Direct quotes from the interview itself to support your claims about your subject; think about which answers she gave would be most interesting to an audience interested in Womens Studies scholarship
    * Direct quotes from learning resources (course modules, articles, powerpoints, other documents) to relate the topics and answers in the interview to Womens Studies topics. To select these, you might consider which passages from the learning resources you would point out in class for students to read and discuss alongside the interview.
    * Detailed discussion about how the interview and the material from the course fit together this is where you analyze your subjects responses as a contribution to Womens Studies scholarship.

Writing Guidelines
This essay should demonstrate that you
* understand the Womens Studies concepts you reference in the essay.
* can demonstrate connections between your interview and our learning resources.
* can write an organized, clear, detailed, and properly cited essay.

Use APA Style to format the report and all citations (in-text and in the references list).

Here are some links to resources which cover the APA format:
* Citation Guides for APA styles at the UMGC Library
* Video help for APA format through UMGC

You may use material that you wrote for Part 2 of this assignment in this paper if those elements are appropriate for this assignment. All parts of this Final Essay should form a cohesive whole, and should represent your best writing. Proofread carefully, including any material drawn from Part 2; your instructor may not have corrected all writing errors on that assignment.

While I am happy to answer questions about the assignment, I encourage you to make use of UMGCs Effective Writing Center if youd like detailed writing help or another set of eyes to look at your paper before you turn it in. The EWC will require a few days to review a draft, so you will need to finish the paper early if you want to submit it to them.

1.  Do you feel it is better to allow individuals the freedom to choose any type of  (or no) health insurance coverage available to them or to increase government involvement in a person’s/family’s healthcare via mandates, such as the ACA and/or the government as a single insurer for all residents.  Why?

2.  Discuss the mission of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI).

3. If you could reform the malpractice or tort laws, what types of changes would you make? When do you feel it is appropriate for someone to claim damages from medical procedures or treatment? Do you feel there should be a cap on the payments, and if so, how would you decide what that cap would be? What are all the different costs involved in medical malpractice suites? Is it easier to talk about tort reform than to actually try to define it?

4.   The rights of people once they have been incarcerated can be a controversial topic of      discussion. Discuss the healthcare rights of the incarcerated population. What do you feel should or should not be provided to those who are imprisoned? Are there certain tests or procedures that they feel should be performed routinely? Why or why not? What is the nurse’s role, based on the section on page 248?
