Module 5 Discussion: Discuss and Debate

Overview

With all the different nervous systems in our body, how do we keep them all straight? For example, some organs have dual innervation, which means that these receive both the action of the sympathetic nervous system and the action of the parasympathetic nervous system. The effects of both subdivisions of the nervous system are totally different. This Discuss and Debate assignment is aimed at helping you organize and explore the functions of the different nervous systems.

You should spend approximately 4 hours on this assignment.

Instructions

  1. Organize your assignment in a way that is most helpful to you for understanding the different functions of the nervous systems. You may have to conduct some additional research to answer these questions. This will help you in your Research and Report assignment.

Create a diagram, image, or presentation that covers the following points:

    • Choose one organ of the body that has dual innervation, and explain the action of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems on that organ.
    • Cite the main nerve plexuses of the body and mention their territory of innervation.
    • Mention the three layers of the eye and their functions.
    • Mention the three divisions of the ear and their functions.
    • Mention the general structures and functions of the taste and smell senses.
    • How can autonomic nervous system imbalances create problems or failures in our bodies?
