Production and Cost – Lion Essays

Part A: Conceptual questions

Suppose you own a television factory and at your current level of output you have average total cost of $800 per television, average variable costs of $700 per television, and a marginal cost of $400.  If the price your buyers are willing to pay is $500, should you decrease or increase production?  Explain your reasoning, and make sure to cite at least one of the required readings in your answer.
You are the owner of a restaurant, and currently you have only one waiter.  While this keeps costs down, many of your customers go home because they are tired of waiting in line or waiting for their order.  You hire four more waiters and waitresses, and you are now able to serve a dramatically higher number of customers.  Seeing the huge productivity gains from hiring more staff, you then hire 20 more waiters and waitresses.  However, you are not able to serve any more customers than you were able to when your staff size was only four.  In fact, your restaurant has become overly crowded because there is not enough room in your restaurant for all of your staff.  You are confused as to why hiring four more staff members increased your productivity, but hiring 20 more did not.  What concept from the background readings best describes what happened in this case?  Explain your reasoning.

Part B: Quantitative problems
The following table gives the total weekly output of bicycles at Al’s Bicycle Town.
Table 1
Labor      Total Product (TP)   Average Product of labor (AP)   Marginal Product of labor (MP)
0               0                                  na                                                     na
1             100                              100                                                   100
2             300                             —–                                                   ___
3             450                             ___                                                    ___

6             ___                             110                                                    ___

Complete this table.
Draw the graphs of the marginal product (MP) and the average product (AP).

Where do the AP and MP curve cross?

The cost of 1 worker is $2000 per month. Total fixed cost is $4000 per month.

Complete Table 2 using your answers from Table 1 and by computing total variable cost (TVC) and total cost(TC).

Table 2
Labor      Total Product (TP)   Total variable cost (TVC)   Total cost (TC)
0               0                                  na                                                  4000

5             630                             ___                                                    ___
6             ___                             12000                                                ___

Draw the graphs of the TC and TVC curves. What is the relationship between these two curves?

Complete Table 3 by using your answers from the previous Tables and calculating the AVC, ATC, and MC.

Table 3
Total Product (TP) Average variable cost (AVC) Average total cost (ATC)   Marginal cost (MC)
               0                                na                                na                                           na
             100                              20                                ___                                          20
             300                             —–                              ___                                         ___
             450                             ___                               ___                                         ___
             ___                             ___                               21.43                                      ___
             630                             ___                                ___                                        ___
             ___                             ___                                ___                                       66.67

Draw the graphs of the ATC, AVC, and MC curves. What is the relationship between the ATC and AVC curves? Between the MC and AVC curves?

Financing of Healthcare

Discussion: Financing of Health Care

With coinciding concerns about health care costs and the imperative to improve quality of care, health care providers and others face difficult decisions in the effort to achieve an appropriate balance. Such decisions often are addressed in the policy arena. How do policymakers evaluate which health care services should be financed through government programs? How do ethics-related questions and other considerations play into this evaluation process? Is it possible to contain costs and provide accessible, high-quality care to all, or is the tension between cost and care inherent in the U.S. health care delivery system? These questions are central to health care financing decisions in the United States.

For this Discussion, you will focus on the policy decision-making process that determines what types of care are covered by public and private insurers and the ethical aspects of such financial decisions.

To prepare:

  • Read the the case study “Economic Impact of States Declining Medicaid Expansion” page 305 of the Milstead text.
  • Review the information in the Washington Post article “Review of Prostate Cancer Drugs Provenge Renews Medical Cost-Benefit Debate” in the Learning Resources.
  • Consider how policy decisions currently are made about what will and will not be paid for and what changes, if any, could improve the process.
  • Reflect on how the Washington Post example illustrates the tension between cost and care.

By Day 3

Post your analysis and assessment of the ethical and economic challenges related to policy decisions such as those presented in the Washington Post article. How does this type of situation contribute to the tension between cost and care? Substantiate your response with at least two outside resources

technology that could improve the implementation process

Re: Topic 5 DQ 2  Technology is integral to successful implementation in many projects,   through either support or integration or both. Name at least one   technology that could improve the implementation process and the   outcomes of your EBP project. Do you plan to use this technology? If   not, what are the barriers that prevent its use?

ANSWER BY ANNE
Technology Support/Integration That Can Improve EBP Project

In the Nelson presentation (2015), one of the research questions put forth was, “Can a centralized, telephone-based model of early childhood developmental screening and care coordination improve quality of care for young children and their families” (Nelson, 2015). There are 211 Call centers that cover over 90% of the US population. In a LA based 211 developmental screening, over 11,000 early childhood screenings and coordinated care have been coordinated with appropriate services. The 211 potential advantages include time availability, standardized and validated online screening tools, extensive resource directory that includes care coordination, data collection and dissemination, continuity of care, and coordination with clinical settings. Of the children screened over 90% received some kind of referral. As the presenter reported, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends universal screening and surveillance at every well visit, screening at 9, 18, and 24-30 months, autism-specific screening tool at 18 and 24-30 months, and prompt referral to evaluation and intervention services. The impact of early screening and intervention has evidence pointing to the improvement in developmental, social, educational, and health outcomes. Society benefits with a pronounced ROI in every dollar invested (Nelson, 2015).

Plans for Use and Barriers to Implement

The idea of starting a similar resource would be fantastic. It is an idea that could potentially be integrated into the school district and county for which I work. The same barriers I see from making it happen are the same barriers that the article mentioned, and that is the 211 has limited documentation. The same concerns that plague us now are the same for 211 regarding lag time between referral and service implantation. Eligibility and participation in services are always the big hinderances to making this work, and of course the age-old question of who will pay for this service (Nelson, 2015).

Reaction Paper #1 & #2 (150 points)

Both of your reaction papers will be written using the American Psychological Association (APA) style and format, 6th edition. You will start by selecting one movie from the list provided below. In the first reaction paper you will discuss certain aspects of the movie that relate to the topics in your textbook that are covered during the first 7 weeks of class. Your paper will analyze one or two characters from the movie based on some of the topics found in these chapters. The second reaction paper will be a continuation of the first reaction paper, further relating your characters to topics in your textbook that will be covered during the last 7 weeks of class.

Your first reaction paper will consist of a title page, abstract page, reference page and 2-3 pages of the analysis of your characters. Your first paper will include at least 6 cited references: 3 cited references to pages from the appropriate chapters, as well as 3 cited references (relating to those same chapters) from academic journals, books, or professional internet sources such as the American Psychological Association, www.apa.org or the Association for Psychological Sciences, www.psychologicalscience.org. (These sites provide references to appropriate articles that you may use in your paper.)

Your second reaction paper will be a continuation of your first paper using the same characters from the movie you selected, but you will now relate your characters to topics found in chapters covered during the last 7 weeks of class. For this second paper, you will adda minimum of 3 cited references from the appropriate chapters in your textbook and add at least 3 more references from academic journals relating to these same chapters.

Your final paper will have a minimum of 6 cited references for your textbook and 6 cited references from other sources such as academic journals, books, or other credible web sites such as APA.

Your final paper will consist of a title page, abstract page, reference page and an analysis of the movie based on the topics in the book – approximately 7-9 pages total.

Because writing is a process, I will provide you with feedback along the way to your final paper. This feedback should be used to make corrections/additions to your final paper. Your first paper with feedback must be handed in with your second paper. Check the tentative calendar for due dates.
