Software complexity is a result of the functional complexity that the code is attempting to enable. There are multiple system interfaces coupled with complex requirements, which drives the complexity of software systems beyond control. This leads to applications that are overly costly to maintain and risky to enhance.
We discussed two different metrics to measure software complexity; McCabe’s cyclomatic complexity, and Halstead’s metrics. Both of these have applicability in a software testing program. Both can be measured with commercial testing tools as well as other methods.
A software complexity measurement program should be implemented for any software organization attempting to increase the agility of software delivery.
Assume you are running the quality organization or leading a team of software testers. What guidelines would you put in place to manage software complexity so that this does not get out of control with your development team?
What tools would you use to help manage software complexity?
What metrics would you use to manage complexity during the course of development?
