Module 7 Discussion

After watching the videos Under Armour | Rule Yourself | Michael Phelps and Michael Phelps’ reaction to Rule Yourself in: Lecture Materials & Resources, discuss the following:

On March 8, 2016, Under Armour ran a promotional add on the Olympic swimmer, Michael Phelps, revealing the intense and rigorous effort that goes into being the most decorated Olympian of all time. View the videos in the link above, which include the promotional advertisement, and a follow-up video showing Michael Phelps and his wife Nicole’s reaction.

Share your thoughts on Under Armour’s marketing direction. What do you think of the end caption, “Its what you do in the dark, that puts you in the light”?

Your initial post should be at least 300 words, formatted and cited in current APA style with support from at least 2 academic sources

For this weekly check-in, read the sixth chapter, “Free Will” on pp. 47-58 in your book What Does It All Mean by Thomas Nagel. After discussing the choice between the peach and the chocolate cake, Nagel says:

So perhaps the feeling that you could have chosen a peach instead of a piece of cake is a philosophical illusion, and couldn’t be right whatever was the case. To avoid this conclusion, you would have to explain (a) what you mean if you say you could have done something other than what you did, and (b) what you and the world would have to be like for this to be true.

For your original thread, explain how you understand the difference between free will and determinism. Next, discuss whether you believe humans have free will. If you think we do, how do you understand us and the world around us such that free choice exists? If you think we do not, are you convinced that free choice is simply an illusion? How does your worldview support that belief?

Answer the Critical Thinking questions from Chapter 7:

Write a 1000-1250 word essay addressing each of the questions. Be sure to completely answer all the questions. There should be at least four sections, one for each question. Separate each section in your paper with a clear heading that allows your professor to know which bullet you are addressing in that section of your paper. Support your ideas with at least three (3) citations in your essay. Make sure to reference the citations using the APA writing style for the essay. The cover page and reference page do not count towards the minimum word amount. Review the rubric criteria for this assignment.

Critical Thinking Questions:
Pedro Gonzales, a 37-year-old Hispanic man, arrives by ambulance from a supermarket where he had fallen. On his arrival to the emergency department (ED), his breath smells fruity. He appears confused and anxious, saying that they put the evil eye on me, they want me to die, they are drying out my bodyits draining me drythey are yelling, they are yellingno, no, Im not badoh, God, dont let them get me! When his mother arrives in the ED, she tells the staff, through the use of an interpreter, that Pedro is a severe diabetic, has a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia, and this happens when he doesnt take his medications. In a group or in collaboration with a classmate, respond to the following: 1. A number of nursing diagnoses are possible in this scenario. Given the provided information, formulate at least two nursing diagnoses (problems) and include related to and as evidenced by as appropriate. 2. For each of your nursing diagnoses, write out one long-term outcome (the problem, what should change, etc.). Include a time frame, desired change, and three criteria that will help you evaluate whether the outcome has been met, not met, or partially met. 3. What specific needs might you take into account when planning nursing care for Mr. Gonzales? 4. Using the SOAPIE format (see Table 7.4), formulate an initial nurses note for Mr. Gonzales.

For this weekly check-in, read the fifth chapter, “The Meaning of Words,” on pp. 38-46 in your book What Does It All Mean? by Thomas Nagel.

At the end of this chapter, Nagel says:

The problem is to explain how this is possible: How does anything we say or write mean anything — including all the words in this book?

For your original thread, do your best to answer his question. What does “meaning” amount to? How is language “connected to” reality? How do words represent the things they refer to? If you are not sure at this point, think back to what you must have assumed about meaning before you read this chapter. How do you think you would have defined “meaning” if you had been asked to do so then?
