Sample Selection and Application

Component 4

Sample Selection and Application

You will enter Sentinel City® via the link to begin your virtual experience by taking a bus tour of Sentinel City®.

Sentinel City® is a city just like your neighborhood. People live there from culturally diverse backgrounds. They vary in age, gender, and income level. Nurse researchers are unable to study the entire world so they choose “groups” or populations to study that actually mirror the population of interest. Your role is to experience the city and identify the “neighborhood” or sample that would provide the best place to study-

  1. Geriatrics
  2. Once you have identified the neighborhoods, complete an analysis of any evidence-based practice intervention that applies to one population of your choice and describe how you would implement this in the Sentinel City® neighborhood. Remember, use resources that are interprofessional, evidence-based and focus on improving health outcomes.

Helpful tips:

Don’t forget to view the Sentinel City navigation tips. After choosing an avatar you may be able to teleport to the various areas by utilizing the interactive map.

1. Question: How do I find out about the people who live in each neighborhood? How do I find out who lives here? How do I find the city population?

TIP: As you ride through the city you will be able to access the population statistics for each neighborhood. It will open on the left. You may pause the bus to view. You may also teleport to an area and choose the information icon.

2. Question: Where can I find information on seniors?

TIP: You may pause the bus and select the rotating icon for specifics about seniors in the city

3. Question: What information is available about healthcare use in Sentinel City®?

TIP: The Sentinel City® Healthcare System data is accessible by selecting the rotating icon. This selection will take you to a menu that has information on dentistry, vision, emergency, ambulatory care, integrated services, inpatient, pharmacy, and elderly.

4. Question: How do I know whom to sample for a research study?

TIP: The researcher will often choose a population that contains the most number of subjects who have the study topic. For instance, to study children choose the area with the most children

5. Question: Where does a nurse find evidence based practice recommendations?

TIP: Visit the American Nurses Association at http://researchtoolkit.org/

6. Question: What type of health promoting activity is interprofessional?

TIP: Think broadly consider nutrition (diet), Activity (exercise), Dental health, etc….

Review these core competencies:

Demonstrate an understanding of the basic elements of the research process and models for applying evidence to clinical practice.

Sample selection

Participate in the process of retrieval, appraisal, and synthesis of evidence in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team to improve patient outcomes.

Interprofessional EBP guidelines

Integrate evidence, clinical judgment, interprofessional perspectives, and patient preferences in planning, implementing, and evaluating outcomes of care.

Interprofessional EBP Guidelines

Collaborate in the collection, documentation, and dissemination of evidence.

Explore research literature for EBP guidelines

Acquire an understanding of the process for how nursing and related healthcare quality and safety measures are developed, validated, and endorsed.

Application of the PICO Model to nursing care

Describe mechanisms to resolve identified practice discrepancies between identified standards and practice that may adversely impact patient outcomes.

Application of the PICO Model to nursing care

All submissions must have a minimum of two scholarly references to support your work.

Examples of work to show mastery:

  • 5 page paper – APA format

Evidence is a piece of information – such as an observation or measurement – that helps explain how we know what we know. When describing evidence, it will usually be something that you see, hear or otherwise observed.
The interpretation of evidence helps us to better understand our world. There are many ways to make interpretations. The best way to interpret evidence is to connect it with what you already know.
For this assignment
Create a table with two columns (as shown below). In the first column list a piece of evidence quoted from the text, then, in the second column, use that piece of evidence to make an interpretation. In total, I would like to see five pieces of evidence with accompanying interpretation. See example below that shows one piece of evidence with its interpretation – this would be worth 1 point for this assignment. Please use a different quote from the text than the one I use in my example.

Evidence
(I saw, I heard, I read in the text…)

Interpretation
(I wondered, I made a connection, I thought…)

EXAMPLE: “Most oil is consumed in automobiles. In 2009, there were 1,201 automobiles for every 1,000 eligible drivers in the United States. In 2010, we consumed 1 billion gallons of gasoline every 30 hours and travelled more than 6.5 billion miles each day. In China, there were 9 automobiles per 1,000 people in 2007, but in 2009, China surpassed the United States as the world’s largest automobile market.” (Garrison, p. 485, footnote in Sec. 17.2)

EXAMPLE: I wonder why there are more cars in the U.S. than eligible drivers and if this will change as more transit options become available.
I also connect these statistics with the fact that China has the largest population of any country on Earth. If they become gas-guzzlers like U.S. citizens, I wonder how much that will accelerate global warming.

OUTLINE FOR CASE ANALYSIS

Title Page (APA formatted)
Case Name:
I. Major Facts
(State here the major facts as you see them. Make statements clear and concise for your own understanding as well as for the understanding of the other students and the instructor.)
II. Major Problem
(State here the major problem as you see it. Emphasize the present major problem. You may wish to phrase your statement in the form of a question. In a few cases, there may be more than one major problem. A good problem statement will be concise, usually only one sentence.)
III. Possible Solutions
A. (List here the possible solutions to the major problem. Let your imagination come up with alternative ways to solve the problem.
B. Do not limit yourself to only one or two possible solutions. These solutions should be distinct from each other.
C. However, you may wish to include portions of one solution in another solution, as long as each solution stands alone. Only in this manner will your subsequent choice be definitive.
D. Briefly note advantages and disadvantages of each possible solution.)
