Cut and paste your entry directly onto the Journal page. No Google docs and no links to Word documents.
Because this Journal involves two chapters in just one week, 10 possible maximum points, rather than the usual 5 , are awarded for this Journal.
Chapters 7 and 8 in Gang Leader for a Day present analyses of inner city police officers, and the prospect of the gang separating following the tear down of the Robert Taylor projects.
Chapter 7, “Black and Blue”
1.Describe the characters of the two police officers depicted in this chapter, using book citations. For those familiar with the Denzel Washington movie “Training Day” (or for those who wish to view film clips on YouTube), you can use the characters in that film as a basis of comparison for Officers Jerry and Reggie in Gang Leader.

Cops Gangs Guns and Murder on the Bloody Streets of Chicago
View the film clip above for a realistic account of cop action in gang territories. This clip is especially pertinent to our reading as it deals specifically with the Robert Taylor projects, the aftermath of its demolition, and gang activity in Chicago, following Sudhir’s time with the
Black Kings. This is a 45 minute clip — you can skip around for information you find most valuable, but watch the first few minutes, as it refers to the Robert Taylor projects from our Gang Leader reading.. The next question will ask you to draw on info from this clip.
2a. Using Table 7.2 on page 225 of our Violence text ( that’s Chapter 7, Table 2 , “The Five Strategies in Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention’s Comprehensive Gang Model” ), describing various strategies to combat gang violence, say which strategies you see in the above film clip and in Chapter 7 of Gang Leader. Use details and citations. Be prepared to entertain the possibility that perhaps prevention is not the main thrust of law enforcement, and to explore what strategies are actually being used, and how they might be replaced by those listed on Table 7.2. Should it be the job of law enforcement to prevent violence, or to merely contain it?
Chapter 8, “The Stay Together Gang”
3. Predict whether or not the Black Kings stay together after the Robert Taylor projects are torn down. Use book citations, and base your answer on the following:
a.the chapter 8 Gang Leader reading,
b. the intro to the video linked in question 2,
c. the slideshow linked below (compare some of the people in the video to those in Gang Leader)
Demolished: The End of Chicago’s Public Housing from 12/12/14 NPR.org
http://apps.npr.org/lookatthis/posts/publichousing/ I checked this link and it works
4. “Furor Erupts Over Killing of Witness in MS-13 Gang Case”
Article is available under course materials if you can not access the link.

Comment, with citations, on the changes in laws that make it harder for witnesses to help law enforcement prosecute gang activity. Could you envision this happening to Sudhir?
5. According to a study by Rutgers sociologist, Frank Edwards, which was cited in the Los Angeles Times and in scholarly journals, a black man has a 1 in 1000 chance of being killed by police, 3x that of whites, and better odds than winning a scratch off lottery. Additionally, it was revealed the police officer instrumental in the George Floyd shooting, Derek Chauvin, had had 18 disciplinary citations during his police career. (Officers who are fired because of disciplinary records are eligible for hire by other departments.) The following strategies are proposed by a number of news outlets and scholarly publications to improve policing tactics: Check officers’ social media; pay police officers higher salaries; law suits against police should impact their pensions; ban choke holds; require more diversity on the police force; demilitarize the police (don’t hire former members of the military; ban no-knock raids and armed vehicles); don’t allow cops with disciplinary records to work on other police forces; require body cams on all forces and on all police calls; address housing, education, health care and employment for poor minorities. Choose one strategy you think would work, and one you think would be ineffective, and say why.
Disclaimer: these are difficult discussions to have for those of us with family members on the police force (I have a 26 year old niece who was just accepted to the NJ State Police Academy, plus 4 other relatives in law enforcement.) As those students who are current or future police officers know, good cops are more effective when bad cops are taken off the force.
6.Choose ONE of the following to summarize, available under Course Materials, if you can’t access link (sometimes headlines differ between links, hard copy and online versions but the articles are the same):
“Fierce Protectors of Police Impede Efforts at Reform” 6/7/20 NYT (Police unions make it harder to reform the police)
“Defund the Police”: Not so Fast, Several Black Politicians Say” 8/10/20 New York Times (Black politicians are not always eager to defund the police)
