Discussion chapter 31

Instruction from Professor:
In this Chapter there is considerable information on the years encompassed by the Reagan and George HW Bush administrations. Incorporate that into a broader discussion of the information contained in the entire course. Identify persistent trends or themes in US history. In that context place the implications of the level of historical knowledge among graduating College seniors on future US leadership decision making.

Use all the supplemental items in each chapter of the course to fill out the discussion.

Topic to Discuss:
Discuss Professor Cronon’s thesis and identify where we find our past and why understanding of it is important.

Discussion chapter 30

The impact of unregulated industrialization, the advances in science and technology, rush to market philosophy leading to inadequate testing, and people themselves littering, wasting and simply being more interested in consumerism led to serious environmental degradation by the 1960s. Use the supplemental material, the text, and Books read, if selected and discuss the Environmental movement.(Use the supplemental items preceding this discussion board but do not limit the conversation to just those items.)

Teresa of Avila’s spiritual autobiography

A common Protestant criticism of Catholicism during this period was that it was insufficiently attentive to the gift of salvation that comes through Christ and that it ignores much of the Bible in favor of church teaching.

Read the selections from Teresa of Avila’s spiritual autobiography (p. 49-52).

First, where do you see allusions and references to the Bible? Please reference any specific texts (If you are not familiar with the Bible, these will be harder for you to catch, but go ahead and try!)

Second, where do you see her describing how we are to relate to God or Christ? Where do  you see encouragements to faith? to work? How are they related?

Write a 2-3 (full) page journal entry (double-spaced, 12 pt type, and 1″ margins) reflecting on Teresa’s biblical theology of faith.

Discussion chapter 29

In his farewell address President Eisenhower warns against the expansion of the Military Industrial Complex. In his Presidency he successfully resisted continual pressure from the military to robustly and unilaterally to attack multiple countries (A few: Vietnam, Korea, Dominican republic, Congo Cuba, Iran, Egypt) on the assumption of anti-communism. Eisenhower resisted such pressures. Discuss U.S Foreign policy, the role of the Military Industrial Complex (As Eisenhower defines it) from the Truman policies of Containment, Involvement in Korea, Overthrow of undesirable rulers and so forth through Eisenhower’s and Kennedy”s administrations. Then perhaps consider the role of the Military Industrial complex in Presedencies from Johnson forward in context of this warning. Useful hint: Military spending amounted to 20% of the 1959 budget and about 60% of the 2016 budget.
